Metal polish

Hi Tim,
For a serious longlasting shine on alloy, use either Meguiars NXT Metal Polysh (their spelling), should be available from Halfords,or any good motor
accessory shop, or MAAS metal polish, available from your local Lakeland household store, both will oulast & outshine Solvol, Belgom etc. by a long way.

anyone tried a polish (for painted surfaces normally, but some used it also on polished alloy already) called "Liquid Glass"? seems to give lots of gloss and protects the surface, but needs a polished surface first and several applications before it really shows its beauty (3-4 times massaging it in). Haven't done it before, but will do on the polished edges of the cup-rims of my 944 S2.

Thanks Haggis. With Liquid Glass, it is said that you do not even need waxing anymore. Just wash the surface, polish it, make sure no polish is on the surface anymore and apply liquid glas, wipe it off with a soft towel and re-apply just liquid glass after washing the surface the next 2-3 times. shall give an almost mirror-like surface and shall last for 5-6 months (depending on usage, weather and the way you clean the painted parts). But as said, I have no personal experience as of yet. will start using it when spring comes and my car gets back onto the road.

i often use solvol on a piece of stiff cardboard - got loads of tubes left from years ago when it was so cheap. Solvol used to use "terry Hart's" immaculate vincent black shadow in their advertising blurb when i was a nipper in Mitcham - terry was from the Mitcham area and was always chugging around on it - that vincent was a beaut - Regards - Phil

I find Solvol infinitely better than Belgom Alu. That has some sort of wax in it so I would apply AFTER polishing with Solvol.

And Solvol isn't French!  :P :-*

ditto - i've got a large bottle of some 3M product i've had for about 27 years, it's really for glazing paintwork, but it works a treat and you need so little of it to get the job done which is why i've still got about a quarter of a bottle after 27 years. I guess it's a bit like the stuff lothar mentioned. i don't know what 'grit' it is, but i'd guess about 3 million

coming back to tim's original quessie - silvo is finer than brasso and does a good job, too. i've still got several large bottles of that from when i worked for reckitts in south africa.

Mu son runs a part time high end auto detailing business out of our home garage, Constant stream of Maserati's, Porsche's, BMW's etc, the neighbours must think I am flipping high end cars or something... Anyway, he uses a lot of Meguiar's products, and pointed me to this thread from the Meguiar's forum (yes, they have a forum..) The Meguiar's NXT Metal Polysh had been replaced by newer and more focused products like the Hot Rims Mag and Aluminum Polish. For long term protection after polishing, use 'Metal Guard" .See below quote:

The difference between Meguiar's Metal Polishes

The question was recently asked about what the differences were between Meguiar's Metal Polishes, the below was compiled to answer that question.

Additional Information
The above is the website and/or catalog copy for each of the products. Keep in mind there are only so many ways to make a metal polish, this means these product are more similar than they are different however believe it or not each formula is tweaked a little differently. Here's what we were able to find out.

Mirror Glaze Professional Line All Metal Polish - Our least aggressive metal polish. Contains protection ingredients.

NXT Generation All Metal Polysh - The aggressiveness level of this product is in-between All Metal Polish in our Professional Mirror Glaze Line and our new Hot Rims Mag Aluminum Polish. This metal polish provides protection ingredients.

Hot Rims Mag and Aluminum Polish - This is our most aggressive metal polish but rest assured it's still completely safe for the recommended metals. It provides the least amount protection out of all our metal polishes. (Likely there is a trade-off in cleaning strength and the ability to leave behind a coating of protection).

Boat/RV Metal Polish - This formula is very similar to our NXT Generation All Metal Polysh however there are some slight formula differences likely related to the conditions found in most Marine environments.

Technically, all of our metal polishes should only be used on bare metal surfaces. If you have some type of coated metal, for example clear coated aluminum wheels, then the first products of choice for this type of coating would be paint care products since you're working on paint and not bare metal.

The formulas for ALL Meguiar's products (company wide) are continually being updated as new chemistry and new technology becomes available. This includes our metal polishes.

Important Note: No Meguiar's metal polish should be used on gold plating. The surface is to soft and to susceptible to scratching especially if the wrong application material is used, (type of cloth for example).

Similar Products

While not a polish, because it's intended to protect metal surfaces in good condition or after being restored using one of our metal polishes, we've included it in this article.

Metal Guard
The revolutionary technology of this specialized formulation allows the longest lasting and most durable protection on the market today. Safe for all metals, it provides a protective coating on the surface which will prevent salt corrosion, water spots, marring and fading. The coating is microscopic and does not leave the surface feeling artificial or greasy.

Or it could just be that you clean and polish the bike very infrequently  8) :P :-*

If the Meguiar's waterless "Spray Detailer" is anything to go by the rest of their products could be crackers. Will give some of their metal polish a try.

Collinite 845 is very good as a top sealant layer (based on the fact that water 'balls' on my car bonnet for a long time after application and subsequent washing). If you are tempted (see web) don't buy a big bottle though, it will last you 20 lifetimes. Apply super thin - so you can't even see it. Just put tiny dabs on a cloth and rub over the surface. 2 spots the size of a coin will do a whole car IMHO. Rubbish for matt finishes though - high gloss areas only.

Used quite few Mequiars products over the years, yet to be disappointed!  A bit expensive, but due to the quality, a small bottle/package will get you lots further than a crappy cheap producrt.
