Mikuni RS36 Bowden Cable

I need to replace one of the cables that control the Mikuni RS36 Carburettors on my Mirage.  I recently discovered that there seems to be a "push" and a "pull" cable (per MotionPro).  This makes no sense to me, as a Bowden cable must pull to function on the carburettors.  It raises the question of where there are different cables in the set. I never paid any mind to this possibility when I set my carburettors up some time back.  Was that a mistake?

They both pull, one pulls the throttle open the other pulls it closed. For which we can thank the safety minded folk on a vehicle safety comittee somewhere.

Mikuni flatslides and I presume also Keihen flatslide carbs need the push/pull throttle cables as the flatslide itself can hang open due to the flow of air through the carb
interesting when you shut off the throttle when lining up for the next corner and the engine keeps on running at near full throttle

Yes, I can readily understand that a positive means of closing the slides is a very good thing.  What I tried to get at, but didn't make very clear, is this: I need only one cable.  Are the cables interchangeable?  If I order a new one, does it matter if it's labeled push or pull?
The reason I bring this up is due the it interference issue.  I struggled to get the mechanism sorted without fouling the underside of the fuel tank. Now I'm wondering if that wasn't due to having two of the "same" cables, when I should have had one "push" and one "pull" cable.
Shimming the rear of fuel tank can get one only so much clearance before the nose of the tank becomes scored by the steering stem.  This being on my 1982 Mirage 1200TS.  Other models may have an easier time of it.

They both pull despite being termed push pull so it shouldn't really matter what cable you use. They are wound onto the throttle pulley in different directions and both pull. You cannot use a "soft" multistrand cable to push.

no, they are not the same cables
different terminations at the throttle so they can not be mixed up
I'll grab the part numbers this afternoon and post tonight, just down for lunch
have to fuel up sometimes  :D

part numbers for the Motion Pro cables is;

Pull cable, 01-0233
Push cable, 01-0234

the cables actually have push or pull written on the side of them

The thing unique to RS's that is worth remembering is the lock nuts on the carb ends of the cable adjusters...Specifically the return or "push" cable. These are known to come off the thread.
The result of this is to have the nut catch between the cable inner and the drum on the carbs....holding the slides open.

I've seen the end result of one instance of this where a bike was written off - parts are still in a tree I believe - and seen a couple of others where the kill switch saved major disaster.
