mirage air filter

Hate that "TERM" - If you're a Motorcyclist's and determined to "OWN" a Ride, you have committed to learn every nut an bolt that makes up that ride and mold her for your personal satisfaction.

well thanks for 2 very informative answers it has helped me make my mind up, as I have only owned it for 3 months I am still learning about laverdas but I think I will cut my losses and once I have sorted it I will sell the bike

Coupla things about airfilters:  The o/e ones get eaten by the engine so you are left with just a couple of plastic grills.  If you have these then you can re make it with some air conditioner filter material.

Unifilter do one that fits.  They are hopelessly over oiled from new- if you use one of these then remove every last drop of oil and run it dry.  Still might be a bit restrictive.

If what you have fits and looks OK, why not use it?

I ran my bike (eventually) without a filter- 5 or 6 thousand miles a year wasn't going to wear it out any time soon- the airbox is stupid small on 180s.

I have found that my engine filters the air automaticaly it uses the air it likes and spits the bad stuff out the exhaust.  :D

You'll have to suck it and see- if it needs a really small main then maybe the filter is restricting things.  It's a tiny airbox -maybe some clever person can come up with a bigger one, lay the battery down and maybe drop the tray it sits on might give more room- book an hour on the dyno and try it with and without the filter, then you'd know for sure.

the bike has the original air box with a car paper element cut to fit inside I thought this may be a bit restrictive hence the question

if you still have the original filter holder then most of us split it apart and use air conditioner gauze element
buy a small roll of it, cheap as from any air con repair place, cut to size, insert in original holder, works very well
if you don't have the holder then you may have to get a Uni-filter but wash and dry it well before use, you have to remove the oil or you get a 5,000 rpm rev limiter

May I refer the learned gentleman to answer number five?  :D

Wolfgang has some sheet metal items, like the original plastic,  to make up a filter by adding your preferred material

I think you missed my point - Read alternative suggestions by other members - AKA: The Original wasn't any better if not worse then what you can Fabricate ;o)

Hi Dave - i shouldn't take too much notice of any silly statements - just sift through the replies that are relevant to you. you can't be too sensitive on this forum. FWIW - i have run all my triples over the years with no filter and never had any problems. - Regards - Phil

I've been running my SF for 45 years (Came from Factory with Velocity Stacks) with 0-Bore Scuffing issues - Mind you I change the Oil frequently. Wish I could mount Filters on the VHB 30A's but they cough out with any form of Duct Work around the Venturi Openings. I got one more shot at it this summer attempting to use a Bread Pan Baking Basket mounted flush against the Venturi Openings with a Flat Filter Element. If that Fails, I either go for Bigger Carbs or just leave it as is.

Don't be afraid to Experiment with Air Filtration - You might have to change Jets to compensate for restriction but it's really not the solution to make a correction for other issue; in other words, 2 wrongs do not make a right.

thanks to the 3 people who PMd me the advice was brilliant ,the bike now has no air filter and is running like a watch ,am going out on it today for a road test .one thing with the car air filter was I couldnt synchronise the carbs so it must have been running rich as hell ,no filter and 5 minutes with the carb balancer and it is so much better thanks guys you know who you are
