Ready to be shot down once again, but I do agree with Bob.
The rims were NOT designed to be run tubeless. Tubeless rims have a different design on the inside of the rim, has something to do with retaining the tyre once the air escapes... only reason tyres remain on the Lav rims is they were incorrectly designed in the first place. A royal pain in the arse removing old, stubborn tyres, much more so than with any other contempory rims. Even fitting new tyres with a not-so-pliable sidewall can turn into a nightmare. Get a very queasy feeling inflating a tyre to 7bar/98psi trying to get the bead to seat properly!
The factory chose to fit tubes at a time when tubeless tyres were just beginning to appear. Perhaps they didn't trust the new technology or simply ignored the advantages, take your pick. Porosity issues could have been solved by coating the rims at manufacture.
Keith has machined Laverda rims to dimensions that allow easy tyre fitting and removal, perhaps the tubeless type rim profile can be incorporated and allow tubeless tyres to be fitted with a quiet conscience.
