More triple frame questions

Guys I have just picked up this 3C project that's been in a collection for 25 years. It is a matching numbers 3C that has Cico seat and side panels fitted and also a front fairing. The front fairing has the correct fairing bracket and fitment but looks like an after-factory fitment. The main question is about the rear shocks - as the mounting points look very good like a factory fitment. Were the Cico bikes fitted at the factory with the bodywork and shock re-position or was this done after they left?

Appreciate your help guys (again :))

Looks like someone has welded on the new shock positions.
The fairing was original fitment on series 2 Jotas and 120 Jotas.
I would guess the fairing mounts to the headstock are not factory original, as n 3C came with fairing mounts on the frame as standard. First 180 triple with fairing mounts on frame was the 1980 Jota and siblings.
Sidepanels are 1200TS standard fitment.
Interested in the rear brake actuation with the rearsets. I assume the linkage pulls the cable to operate the drum.
Frame looks 3C-standard (no seat lock lugs), but just re-angled shocks and cut off original upright shock mounts.

Hi Badger, those Paiolis might look the business with their pressure gauges, but have pretty simple internals, classic show-offs, should be ok on a moped.  Would rate them being inferior to Konis and even AG Stradas. Sealing kit for the piston rod is somehow still available (at a price), pressure gauge and its cover as well as the reservoir internals can be considered as unobtainium, but you can omit the gauges by simply plugging their connection to the reservoir. You'd better bin this thingies straightaway, though. :D

Seems the rearset linkage is connected to a lever which is bolted onto the original brake pedal shaft.

Wonder about passenger footrests being still on the bike. The ladies will come close with that seat, that's for sure :D Nice project, would love to see it reverted back to a 3C.

Hi Badger
I kind of like it in white it looks OK, say what number is the bike.
.... as per others the shock mounts are not original, if you look at a later bike with laid forward shocks from factory you will see what I mean.  The tail piece was used by Cropredy also along with the front gaurd.

Say be careful of the horns where they are mounted as they tend to crack the oil coolers This happened on my 3C so I moved them to under the headlight as per the later ones or you could move them down the engine mount brackets as per the later later ones if that makes sense.

If you are going to go back to a 3C look then if you want to sell the tail piece I would be interested. The front gaurd on your bike is also a Cico one so again if you wanted to back to 3C wirh original gaurd I also would be interested.

Wow-now that looks like an 80's redux. A Mike Score haircut, teal blazer w/ rolled sleeves and basketweave espadrilles & you're set. I like it. A Cico or Harris fairing would complement the lines better. What are your plans with it? Does it run? Nice bike.

Thanks for the comments and information guys - in two minds what to do with the bike. I think I will restore it back to original spec but it would be kinda cool to fit a better full fairing and have it as 70's racer. To take it back to original I would need mudguards for both, rear light, seat, headlight brackets etc. does anybody have any of these?

Have just got the bike and it has a genuine 22k Km's on the clock so I'm hopeful of the engine being fine.

Will have a bit more of a look at the bike today and report back.

Thanks again!

Here is  a fairing that would be more fitting and a reasonable price

Keeping in mind that this is usually race wear body work ie. very thin fibreglass and prone to brake easily. What I usually do to remedy this is lay up another coat of chopped glass from inside (beefs it up a bit) or as I have done with my seat unit skinned it with carbon fibre cloth over the top for a hi-tec look. and cheaper than you could pay for some expensive replica  panels.

Guys, on the 3C are there any seat hinge brackets on the frame? Just trying to see what's missing to take back to standard. I guess there should be two set locating brackets at the front of the rear subframe (sort of Z shaped.....sort of). How does the seat attach at the back, does it bolt to the two eyes next to the proper shock mounts?

Does anybody have any dimension drawings for the original shock mounts or a dimentioned picture?

Cheers guys

Jamie

Hi Jamie,

The picture should give you an idea where the z-shaped tongues and rear brackets of the seat are located, as well as the shock mounts. I can measure you up the dimensions of the original shock mounts and the seat brackets off my bike tomorrow, in case no one steps in with a factory drawing in the meantime.

Regards,
Stefan

Herewith a (factory?) frame diagram, posted on the forum some time ago, but I can't recall by whom.    Seems to be of an early triple, so there may have been changes for the later 3C's

The drawing posted by Tom seems to miss the details on shock and seat mounts, so here is what I found on my 3C (late 1973, 38mm forks, w/o oil cooler). Sorry for the crap pics, my camera has become a bit aged.

Shape of front seat lugs:
seatlug1.jpg

The distance of 144mm might be questioned, I needed to cut and reweld the bracket on my expensive but rather shoddy repro seat, as it was to narrow to slid over the lugs. Don't know if it was caused by wrong dimensions of the seat bracket from the retro seat, or the lugs on my frame being out of tolerance with the 144mm.

And here the position of the seat lug on the frame tube:

Shock mounts:

The 420mm have been measured the same way as the 110mm on the second pic of the seat lug. Don't get fooled by the picture, in reality the shock mount looks mostly symmetric when viewed from top, the appearance on the picture comes from the camera angle.

Shock mounts viewed from rear:

The rear lugs for the seat seem to be still in place on your frame, but the grab bar on the left for lifting the bike on the main stand is missing, too.

Hope this helps, if something is missing, just ask again.

That's fantastic info guys, really appreciate the time and effort.

New to laverda and new to this forum but it's the best!!
