Motogaget M-Unit?

Hello, Spondonrider,
A friend of mine has it in his 750.
Saw him install it, makes wiring very easy and
saves you some cables.
Has integrated electronic flasher unit
and an electronic relay that can be used
for the horns.
After an electronic fuse has reacted it can
be reset by switching ignition off and on
again.
Diagnosis function by LEDs.

Yes, I fitted one to one of my bikes (POP).
It is a quality piece of kit but I still ended up with several relays in the harness.
It assumes lights on permanently and I wanted the on/off function so had to add some relays.
Also it is not man enough for the job to handle the starter relay so I added one of these too.

You have the option of running very light gauge wiring and overall the wiring can be simplified.
Would I fit another? Probably not (for the reasons stated above).
Then again, I am a Luddite and electrics are the devil's work.  :-\

PLC fitted one to someone's bike as well by the way.

Not sure I'd agree that it makes wiring any easier. In fact it may even make it a little more complex depending on what you want to do.

I should declare that I've never actually clapped eyes on a M-Unit, but I have studied them in detail, read through the programming and installation notes and nutted out what wires need to go around them. Basically it's a bunch of electronic relays and curcuit breakers conveniently packaged in a neat box. It's also programmable for various inputs and outputs. For example, you can have continuous or instantaneous contact for indicator switches - that sort of thing.

While it does some neat tricks, it also limits you to what functions are available via its inputs/outputs and programming flexibility. If you want to do something that the M-Unit isn't designed for (like switching off the headlight) then you need additional hardware external to the unit.

My preference if wiring a bike from scratch would be to keep it simple and not use fancy gadgets like the M-Unit. I'm sure other people would have an opposing opinion - equally valid. It's a personal choice.

I have to agree with Cam, makes a simple job complicated. I have wired dozens of bikes from scratch and never saw the need for anything like the Motogadget, it is basically an expensive box of relays.

I think the forte of the M-unit is for radically simplified wiring and switchgear for such as streetfighters and chops and other such pared down bikes.
You can have one switch on the bars with multi functions, handled by the M-unit.

The M-unit allows you to program number of flashes of the indicators before cancelling, a flashing brakelight, and variability of the flash frequency. It is a quality item, but from my experience of it on my bike I would not fit another if I was staying with the full, original wiring harness.

I cant comment on the unit but if you could have classified my bike as a streetfighter (in all but final appearance) road legal with lights, starter and charging system.4  years of riding and not a single relay, except for the main starter relay and no switch problems.

Just my tuppence worth on keeping it simple...one route, not necessarily the best for all people !

well - that's the point... it is not designed as a replacement for relais, it is designed to minimize the cables needed for a full installation from scratch. That is what I am going to do with the Motoplast, as there is not one wire yet on that frame. For that, it is a neat thing that can help dummies like me to keep track of the wires. and if you put it at the right location, it can indeed simplify the installation a lot.

Hi Ed

are you going to try and banish any last remaining electrical demons from the Spondon RR? I think the M Unit would really suit your bike, in spirit, intent, and function. The M unit is just that little bit slightly over the top, realy well engineered, just like your bike.

I don't remember any issue with the starter relay, but I will defer to Grant's more recent experience with an M unit on a Laverda. I would fit the M unit to your Spondon without hesitation.

Lothar, what are you talking about?
It has a 'relay' for indicators and even (lower power) starter motor.
It also has a 'relay' for lights as well.
As you say it is for a 'designed from scratch' wiring harness, just like the one I have on POP.
Except I had to add 5 relays to cope with starter, lights etc.

Thats my intent Paul yes. I've just finished fixing another wire that let the smoke out and I just want to redo the whole thing from scratch. The M-Unit looks like a nice setup that I thought (along with their M-Lock) would be good on the Spondon. Not sure I need most of what it does though, no turn signals to wire up, I don't care about flashing stop lights, the bike doesn't even have a horn, but the M-Unit does get serious points for style.

According to Motogaget the M-Unit can handle starter relay duty's, up to a point, but either way I don't mind the bikes "stock" starter relay (GSXR 1000). Its mounted cleanly and is easily replaceable if needed. Part of this project will be the design and engineering of a HID projector headlight which doesn't need relays so I wouldn't need any further external controls. For now I'd stay with the standard Ducati switchgear, but seeing pictures of the Motogaget M-Switch I could see changing over in the future as it could really clean things up behind the fairing.
