Mounting Instruments - early bracket - help required.

Having a devil of a time mounting instruments on my SF1 - this has the earlier steel frame with no bolts in rubber to do up like on the later models.  Have tried removing chrome back cover, putting tacho through holes with rubber ring in place, but cannot seem to get enough purchase with the screw through the chrome back cover.

Anyone able to advise me of where I am going wrong, or offer ideas - please?

You are using the method I have always used.
The wires bundled in there usually need careful placement to get the cover in close enough for the screws to take.
Alternatively the rubber rings may be larger than the original ones which were very thin. Check if the gauge is sitting tight down against the ring, and if the backing is sitting hard up against it.
Some silicone or similar lube may help.

Thanks Tippie.

Went and had another go today and found the issue - the old rubber rings looked perfect, but I had a set of new ones, so tried them.  Bingo!  The fault lay in the fact that although the old rubber rings for the instruments looked fine, they must have hardened over time and therefore had lost their 'give'.  They looked fine to the eye, but were the cause of the problem.  Bit of Silicone spray on new rubbers and all sorted.  Old rubbers went in the bin..

I had read before somewhere about not re-using the old rubbers if you did not know their age and now I am a firm believer in that theory - the difference was like chalk and cheese.

I had ordered a couple of sets off Wolfgang which arrived a couple of weeks ago - not the cheapest parts to buy, but would recommend to anyone doing a restoration that they have a set on hand.

Took the bike out for a ride this afternoon - first in just under 2 years.    200 kms trip all round, up The Old Road and on the way to Lower Hunter Valley.  Bike ran great, but need to get front brake shoes machined to suit drum and also check rear shoes and alignment (little bit of a weave noticed in back end).  Just running in after an engine rebuild by Will in Sydney - crank rebuilt by Red with Carillo rods and Ross pistons.  Will do another run before checking it all over and dropping the running in oil for some of the Penrite 10W50 Gas that is recommended.

Many thanks to Will and Red for their good work - I'm a lucky fella...

That is good news. Glad to hear that your bike is on the road after the big job.
Remember with drums to center the assembly by applying the brakes fully when you tighten the axle.

Thanks for the encouragement, guys.  It is a lovely bike to ride and for any Sydney based triple owners out there that have yet to ride an early twin, give us a call and come and have a go.  I am so glad I decided to get an SF having only ever ridden triples before.  The 1200 is getting closer to being finished up at Red's, with GSXR rims, upgraded Brembo's, front end kit, new paint, worked head and Mik's and a few bits more..  Looking forward to getting that back on the road as well..

I like the look of the seat on the SF1, but it has a very poor finish and shape definition - too soft in the foam department and slightly off to the right .  Bit of re-glueing to start with and then see if I can get Tony from Eldorado to supply a different cover and foam - perhaps with lettering or logo on the back?

Going to have a crack at that front drum this morning Tippie - see if I can get it working better.  My view is that the drum should be not far behind the '74 Brembo setup of the following year - a bit more prone to fade if raced, which I'm not doing on it, but nevertheless a good front brake for the day.

Yogi, lovely bike but it's far from being an early twin. They appeared in 1968. Yours is in fact nearly the end of the line with it's big valve head and 36mm carbs. ;)

Thanks Paul,

Yes, I know it is a 73 SF1 and that there were earlier model of the twins.  ;)

Perhaps my choice of words was poor, but I was meaning early as in before the SF2 and SF3 with the disc brake front ends (and rear in the case of the SF3), and the Zane era bikes.

No disrespect to your bike and others intended!

Yogi, thinking about who has triples and twins in the club,I expect I would be the only club member who hasn't ridden a twin.Going around the tables at a typical club night surprisingly a hell of a lot have both.I heard Will had a quick spin on your Monti, and pronounced it fn quick.Happy to take you up on the ride offer.Be interesting to so how it goes compared to all the miles I have done on Bonnie's over the years.Thats some collection you have now.BTW I love that chirping type exhaust note the twins make.

Vince,

Give me a call - 9918 3395 at home or 0416 045 142 if I'm out.  Mobile does not work at home.
You can try the 750s on the road as they're registered, and take the Barcelona around the back streets!

Hi Yogi
Just about to get my SF1 running great looking bike so much better than modern lookalike plastic.
Good riding
