Mudguard Split

Best catch it quick or it will propagate, like the one on my latest acquisition.

You could drill a hole where the crack stops and this will stop it spreading further until you can get someone to weld it for you.

Front mudguards are still available new I think.
I have an un-cracked replacement for the bike in the above pics (although second hand).

But it stands a good chance it will crack again ;)

Not really, a crack keeps getting worse because any stress concentrates on a tiny area where the crack ends.
When you drill a hole there the stress is distributed over a much larger area and stops further cracking dead in it's tracks.

What about a carbon fibre one from boba painted orange or would that crack too?

No problem to weld the crack up, I've done several mild or stainless makes no difference you just need someone shit hot with a Tig. Which I am..  :) ;)

Modest too  :-*

Good advice given by all and "they all do that sir" (mine did, pretty damned fast). Richard Slater had some mild steel ones years ago, as did Wolfgang. To be honest though, I would weld it, as a new one will probably split anyway. For now, the drilled hole would buy you a lot of time, as long as you seal it to stop rust...

Mine did it from new.
I just shaped and welded in a 25mm x 3mm thick strip of mild steel inside across the top and the bottom,
repaired the crack at the same time and repainted.
Here we are 30 years latter and never had the problem resurface.
Cheers
Bruce
