ND Speedo nylon gear

Hiya H?kon
I?ve got an ice cream container with old instruments and bits in the workshop. Will have a look tomorrow for you. The bit you have is u/s anyway so you have nothing to lose by going with Cam?s skimming idea, except maybe wrecking the sample the gear place probably want.
Cheers

I'm going to follow VanguardontheLav's advice and splitt the nylongear in two halfs and arrange it so the least worn parts are in the middle. Put some glue in between parts to hold them together. Will take some photos of the prosess.

Cheers

There are some potential issues with splitting the gear. Nothing that would stop you doing it, but some that you will need to think about.

1. you will lose some length because of the width of the cutting tool used to split it, so it will have to be shimmed (or maybe not if it's simply a press fit on the shaft).
2. It's a little hard to tell from your photo, but the outer ends of the gear appear to have a bevel on them, so that will need to be machined off so the ends are flat and the teeth fit together with no gaps, which will take more out of the length.
3. I don't know how the gear is made, but I suspect a mass production item would be injection moulded plastic rather than cut with a gear cutter. So even if the ends aren't bevelled, there may be some artifacts from the moulding process that will need to be cleaned up.
4. As mentioned earlier, the joined ends will need to be dead flat and square to the shaft, so you'll need a lathe to do it properly.

Let us know how it turns out.

C heers,
Cam

Joe the BMW gears you can get from http://www.hardtoptire.com/producto_en-hardtop.php?id=168&id_familia=104&id_catalogo=19

I put a set into my K1100 and they are still working after 20,000ks.

Done by this guy, anyone contemplating a 3D printer to DIY will find this interesting as well....

Can we persuade Red to get a printer?!,great article ,thanks drikko.

Thanks Drikko,

I'll enquire about the R90/6 rev counter from them...It's a common fault the rev counter gets noisy and then has a manically fluctuating needle which induces a kind of stroboscopic epilepsy in me and i lose the will to go on..I pulled the cable...and now it is merely sleeping awaiting my best efforts..

Kinda relegates casting into the "old technology" bin.

But keeps forging very much alive.
