Neutral switch

Apologies, yet another question. It's been 15 years since I last owned this bike.

We managed to get the neutral switch to work outside the bike but when we insert it into the case it doesn't work? Is there something missing? What should we be troubleshooting?

presuming your wiring is correct, then you have a dimensional issue, your copper or fibre washers are the wrong thickness so the toggle is not being contacted by the dimple on the shift drum thus providing the earth that is required for the switch to work
use a thinner washer
