New Clutch cable slop

So out of expediency went to fit new clutch cable in advance of Sunday. Cables both Venthill and both same length. For some reason when I fit the feckin thing seems longer, too much slack even with the clutch end adjusted fully. The wheel on the lever has been without spring for years so that hasn?t changed. Only thing that is slight different about cables is the lever end as in pic. Any ideas?

The critical dimension is the difference between the inner and the outer, plus the end diameter of the metal furel on the outer and the nipple size, they need to fit as well. As an example, SL and TL Pantahs have exactly the same engine but for some odd reason, an SL clutch cable only fits if the adjustment is absolutely fully out and even then its not enough. It's not bar hight, this difference is in that inner to outer length size difference. If you have an extended lower lever check it doesn't hit the case when pulled in before fully pulled in. Mine did that for a while, I forget the fix. I think a correct length rod internally

Obviously they are a bit different but not enough to make any difference, as said a pic of both cables next to each other would be good. A good few years back Marty broke a cable on day 1 of a Snowy Run, we had 4 spare cables between us.

I?ve put them back on the bike now but checked they are same length although the cable outer is thicker ?heavy duty? so not sure what impact that has. Will try again at some point when I?m not rushed. Probably got 5+ mill movement on lever housing so might see if that helps.

What does this spinny wheel thing do and how?

Let?s hope someone has a spare on Sunday

That's the upper clutch cable Freeplay adjuster, you get the major adjustment down at the bottom and that upper one makes it easy to allow for fine adjustment when riding. Its got plenty available up there as well, a good 15 to 20mm. It's a sexy gadget thats a bit propriotory on Laverdas. Not you're typical threaded hollow bolt and locknut. At some point you should set it up so you can back off this upper adjuster enough so you can swop cables without needing to touch the lower adjuster, makes changing cables easier.

Carlo, the wheel is threaded inside and the internal part that the cable goes through has a male thread. As you wind one way or the other the adjuster goes in or out, adding or reducing cable freeplay. If you're stuck, you can add in a section of 'spacer' with a slot that gets it back into the adjustable range. Any brake cable adjuster from a bicycle would work - readily available in bicycle shops. Could get you out of a bind.

I?ll have another go at fitting it up at the weekend and take a side by side picture. I will also have a look at how that adjuster is working - have a feeling something may not be right there. I will have the collective brains trust to advise on Sunday

If it's not working, then the thread in the adjuster wheel is likely to be stripped. I had that happen once. You could twiddle the wheel all day and it had no effect.

Pretty easy to spot - if the adjuster doesn't move outward when you turn the knurled alloy wheel, then yes, probably stripped thread in alloy.

I wonder if you can get helicoils with slots
