Having just purchased a 1979 Jota??
I am after a little help / advise on bringing it back to its former glory.
The first problem i have is the speedo is in KPH and i would like to convert to MPH. I have been in touch with CB750 clocks but he doesnt show the same faces as on my bike.
My faces do not have the Laverda Logo is this correct for a 79?
i will try and attach a photo of the clocks.

Thanks Andy

Andy, welcome.
CB750Faces will be able to convert your clocks to mph with the correct faces. He has just done 3 sets for me, all perfectly.
Just tell him what you want and he will do it.

Looks like you have yourself a project there!
More 'before' pics please!
Then 'during', and then 'finished'...

:D

Andy welcome it might pay to start from the bottom "of the bike" and work your way up you may have far greater challenges to deal with in comparison to your clocks not sure if they had logos in 1979 Grant will know??

I bought my 79 Jota brand new and still have her and she never came with the Laverda logos on the clock faces.
Logos were an earlier deal.

My 1979 1200 (kph speedo) had no logos, as in the picture below.

You only have to look at the km readings on the odometer and trip meter to figure out that something is not kosher. The bike was pranged and rebuilt (by previous owner) with new instrument internals, glass and cases, but the faces are original.

I sold the bike in 2007 to Richard Crispin in Darwin. He sold it on a couple of years later. Engine/frame #1218. I wonder where it is now. Anyone here got it?

Cheers for the replies lads.
No logos it is then.
I have just imported it from the Netherlands (ebay) it arrived Tuesday morning.
Dating cert arrived today and its just flown through the MOT so its off to Sheffield tomorrow to try and get it registered.
I have done about 30 miles on it today(Got lost after MOT) and it runs mint.
The only problem is the rear lens has now fallen off.
My plan is once registered strip it and repaint the frame as its quite scabby.
So the question is what colour frame as it black at the moment but i do prefer them in silver.
An other problem to sort is its on K&N filters and i hate them ,whats the chance of finding an original airbox and rubbers
Cheers Andy

Slater sells new airboxes and rubbers.

79 Jotas were orange/black stripes and silver frame, but you are free to make it any colour you want.  :D
Some folk say there are enough orange Jotas in the world!  :o

That might be Mingh's old bike Andy. If it is he can give you plenty of history. He's on here quite often.

i think you might be right i have search back to a post when he advertised it for sale and it describes the bike i bought.
No wonder the motor sounds so sweet.

If it is Minghs old one, it's got one of my cranks in it... :D

Spent to day stripping my new laverda ready for painting the frame tomorrow.
Apart from wear in the centre stand pivot the only other damage i can find is a small tube on top of the swing arm that has suffered chain rash.
Is this a mount for the chain guard and is it just a plain tube or should it be threaded inside.
Cheers Andy

just saw this thread. It might very well be my previous bike.
Did you get ot off a guy called Hans Verbeeck?

It was my first laverda, and about the only triple i could find. turned out to be a bag of nails, and had considerable work (read expense) done to make it work. Although there are indeed points of attention to how it looks, i never invested too much in it to avoid it becoming too sanitized. Your call off course to leave it showing its battle scars, or clean it up entirely.
As far as the clocks go: i never touched them.
Chain rash: was there when i bought it and didn't get worse. I had a nylon thingy made to sit between the tube and the chain.

Happy to respond to all your questions, but as i only had the bike for about 3-4 years i won't have the answer on all.
Can mail you some pictures of the engine rebuild if that would interest you.

Yes it came from Hans and it has the nylon piece around the frame to protect it.
The engine is a credit to you as it runs mint with no rattles/ smoke etc and just had a new battery too.
My plan is to not spend too much and just tart it up. Saying that though i have already blown nearly ?500 on a complete standard air filter / seat cover / rear light new bars and both clocks overhauled and converted to MPH /registering MOT and Tax.
Any picture of the engine rebuild would be great thanks.

Andy

cheers,

It's great to be in touch and to see it went to a good home. I wish you all the best and heaps of fun with it. PM me your emailaddress and i'll forward you a few pictures.
The pictures on the ebay ad had different side panels, seat, tail than when i sold it. Not sure if other things have been changed. I don't know Hans at all. Met him only once to collect the bike. He wasn't very verbose, but i must say he was correct to deal with.

My intention was to turn this bike into something along the lines of the bike below, but more and more i started falling for a 3C. I sold the bike because of lack of time and priorities, but regretted it from the moment i rolled it in hans' van. So I recently bought a 3C http://www.laverdaforum.com/forum/index.php?topic=88999.0.
Working my way through the paperwork to get it on the road, and i'm hoping it's just as characterful but just a tad less tiresome when you don't feel like -or traffic doesn't allow you to- ride enthousiastically.

Now Cam, i seem to have missed something about the clock. How do you see it was pranged?
