Hi
I have brushed back the oil hose fittings to bare metal and they look pretty good. Any suggestions as to a suitable coating to preserve then from rusting apart from getting them replated?
Thanks

Nothing except I have to send them 1200kms away to get done. Also presume you have to dismantle to get plated? Just thought there might be some other options.
Thanks

Peter, seriously, home plating (zinc or nickel) is just not a big thing, lots of small shops do it on a very small scale and charge a handsome profit for doing what's really very easy. If you were in the Land of Sepp I'd be pointing you towards www.caswellplating.com, they have a small electrodeless nickel plating kit for small steel parts for $150 http://www.caswellplating.com/electroplating-anodizing/nickel-plating-kits/electroless-nickel-mini-kit-5-pint.html. Mix the chemicals, chuck the parts in, pull them out an hour later, you are done :o.
And you can take them down to the pub and a) show all your jealous mates and b) drive the chicks crazy :D :D (and what's the use of that at our age?  :-X).

Sounds like a viable other option to me. And there may be Aussie suppliers of similar kits, there's this thing called Google....

1200km??  :o   Where are you Peter, Oodnadatta?

If you're looking for a coating other than plating, that you can do at home, then paint is pretty much your only practical alternative. An epoxy paint should be reasonably oil and heat resistant.

Only other handyman solution I can think of is tinning them with solder. I've never had much luck doing that to steel though.

Cheers,
Cam

Yes, easy to dismantle. Get a really good grip of the hose and turn the fitting clockwise with spanner to wind off - left hand thread.

Thanks all. sorta the answers I expected.

The postie is pretty efficient and by plane its not that far, its just a pain in the arse chasing things up (I seem to have a Speedo which has dissappeared into a black hole).
The truth is I'm trying to put averything back together and getting pissed off when I come across something minor which I haven't attended to before. And I also like the look of the bare metal..........

Cheers

Peter,

Even possible to have the fittings plated without disassembling the hoses, depending on which version you have.  Doesn't harm the rubber and it comes out like new (if still in reasonable condition).

Bright zinc is the way to go...

Peter,
you can buy cold zinc paint products, may be a very cheap and easy alternative
not used them myself so not certain how good they are

Anyway, buggered the hoses getting the fittings off ::)
Today went up to local farm industrial shop and bought some new hose. Bloke told me that fittings like that are for hydraulic hose and not hose that was on there which is designed for push in fittings. He reckoned that cutting thread on outside of hose will weaken the rubber which are not reinforced like hydraulic hose. Told him it was low pressure and hoses had been there for over 30 years, so he took my $5 and gave me .5 metre of hose. Took home, cut to length and screwed fittings back on. Presume all will be ok.
