Oil filter Jota

After a couple of hundred kms on a recommissioned (not rebuilt) motor, I dropped the oil today from the bung beneath the gearbox. Since there's no proper oil filter to thoroughly catch any junk in the circulating oil, should I be concerned about the small number of microscopic bright shards in the bottom of the oil bucket? Is this normal?
I plan to pull the filter plate off tomorrow and look further, but I'm kind of hoping someone with more Lav knowledge than me is going to say, this is normal
Thanks
Chris

Not ideal of course and not 'normal' , but not necessarily disastrous. A rebuilt motor could indeed throw out some small metal shards on first run. Was is rebored, with new rings? Test the shards with a magnet - ferritic? Do they have any shape or form -  round, etc?
Maybe run a magnetic sump plug next and see what is caught.

If you'd had an oil filter, unless you'd opened it, you wouldn't have seen anything.
Ignore a small number of microscopic metal shards. Worry if it's a large number and not so microscopic.

Always metal to be found in engines with integral gearbox, especially so if chains are involved as well.  Magnets are quite useful for keeping at least the ferrous stuff out of circulation.

Short oil change intervals were not specified for fun. ::)
