Oil

cold pressed extra virgin olive.

Mind you, tried some cold pressed rape at the weekend & it would make an interesting substitute

some things just never change
was wondering how long it would take before we had an oil thread

:D

Hey Rob,

If you've been running mineral oil like me I can recommend Valvoline 20W-50.
I even bought the motorcycle specific oil to have peace of mind.
A bit pricey but it appears that the engine runs smoother.

I was in Toddys shop a long time ago, might have been late in 1999, and a bloke walks in , then buys some spares, quite a big order, several hundreds of pounds (possibly) and then says to Phil
"what should I do about this unleaded fuel then?"
he replied
"good idea to put some in the tank"

so now that I am running again, and have my 1000 mile (from brand new) RGS type head installed on TOG (absolutely yards of piston to valve clearance useing flat top Mondials by the way) should I ditch the Castrol valvemaster and just squirt in cheapo unleaded (7.8:1 comp ratio)? I am sort of shitting myself that those lovely new factory valve seats and steel valves will suffer, all shims on very close to 3.00mm two are even above (specially made by my son David) does anyone actually know, or is it just opinions.

Not sure if Laverda ever fitted hardened seat to the triples (except the actual seat on my Corsa, facking rock hard).
General advice is use unleaded, monitor valve clearance, adjust or replace as necessary.
As yours is so lightly used it may go for many thousands of miles before receding enough to be a problem.

My 1200 head had done around 20,000km when I rode to Holland, using unleaded all the way there and back and that did the seats in comprehensively. LRP was still available in Spain at the time and seemed to be kind to the head, but on a long hard run any issue is magnified.

Clem,

We had this discussion on the German forum a while back and one forum member tried both, running his 3CL with an additive (BP?) and without. He stated that the additive did not slow down valve clearance recession at all.
