Anyone that knows Wilfred the RGS will know that the paint has more chips that a pack of doritos
I am toying with the idea of a respray and just wanted to see if I can get any solid info on whether any special paint needs to be used on Bayflex.
the prep work needed is quite extensive as the bodywork looks like it has been sprayed over quite a few times. There is some heavy flaking/peeling especially on the side panels.
Can you use thinners on the bayflex without damaging it?
any special primer needed to adhere to bayflex?

any help would be much appreciated

Hi Joey, Bayflex is a type of Polyurethane with modifiers to make it flexible. I would expect that thinners like acetone etc wouldn't worry it but I can't be sure. To paint it any of the 2 pac polyurethane paints should be fine. If there's paint peeling off then the surface wasn't prepared properly ie fine sanded and wiped over with thinners or cleaner properly.

One of our Concours sponsors Motorcycle Paint and Panel should be able to advise you.

Was also going to mention 2pac Seems to stick to anything. There are plastic primers available design for flexible objects like car bumpers etc. I use to use  Dulux plaspac to spray styrene prior to spraying acrylic lacquers
in my model making days. Acrylic wouldn't bond to the styrene and would sometimes come off with the masking tape, hours of work lost!! As far as spraying motorcycles go I'm sold on 2pac. It flows so nice when spraying.

Cheers rob and drikko. Yeah I think I will ask panel and paint as well. I have a bit of experience under my belt and was prepared to do all the prep myself then maybe get the pros to finish it off.
Just being a tight arse I guess.
I was originally going to plastidip it but the dip on my scooter seems to wear near edges if it gets knocked.

and i got 'another' concours sponsor, Dutchy at Silver Star Bikes down at Wynnum, to repair and paint the fairing on Miss J.  a good job.

i think they call the '81 Jota fairing material 'ABS' plastic, not Bayflex, but i ain't into all that polymer chain chemistry stuff.
