Pistons and Valves in Sync?

I'm putting the head back on my RGS1000SFC after a long hiatus, so my memory is fading regarding how I took her apart.  It seems like  I remember someone saying or reading somewhere that with the valves indexed in the correct position the number 1 piston (the one on the clutch side) should be at TDC.  Is this correct?

On a 120 with #1 (clutch side) at TDC the cam lobes should be facing somewhat together and down.  If viewed from the left side and taking the head face as being at 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock, the exhaust lobe should be roughly 4 o'clock and the inlet 8 o'clock.  Very roughly.

A 180 is assembled on the opposite stroke, #1 lobes facing away from one another.

My cams are lined up, thusly:

  Is this what you meant?

Sorry, I misunderstood you.  Yes your photo shows exhaust cam correct for #1 cylinder at tdc, assuming F1 cams and all other things being correct.  The description I gave above is a gross error check to make sure you're in the ballpark.  In the event your sprockets have been removed from cams it's possible to install sprockets to cams 180deg out.

I never took the head apart.  I just removed it from the barrels to inspect valves/condition.  Motor has 3200 km on it.  Everything looked fine, so I'm just reassembling as disassembled.  Should be fine, assuming it ran ok before being parked.
