Primary Case Problem

I have seen, that on the Inside of the 3 C (180) the Primary Chain touches the Case on the upper site, after putting the Case to the Engine, I found that the Chain is still rubbing the PrimaryCase!
Whats wrong there? I did not ride the Bike, but bought the Engine in pieces...

If I was you I would fit a quality chain, like Andychain's duplex chain, and then once fitted see what space you have.
It looks to me like a very slack chain has rubbed against it.

Sounds a little crazy - but do you think someone has fitted an oversize crankshaft sprocket to raise the overall gearing?  I know it is normally done on the final drive.....but you never know  ;)

Is there wear on the chain?
Was it fitted to the bike when you removed the casing?
Maybe it was a problem from a long time ago, with another chain.
I am reasonably sure that a new chain would not have enough slack to get anywhere near that casing.

After measuring the Distances, I found that the Chain cannot touch the Case on this spot, exept the Crankshaft is moving outwards!
After sticking all together I still got this rubbing sound, lokking closer, I seen that the Bearings in the Cover a dirty, and making this sound!
Cleaning the bearings and having a Beer! :-X

How is the crankshaft moving outwards? Sounds like something is not right. The outer primary case bearing is not there to prevent lateral movement of the crankshaft.

How is the crankshaft moving outwards?

Sounds like the "c" ring that fits in the case/outer bearing may be missing.  (Excuse me if I am a long way off the mark, but it has been a while since I delved inside some triple cases).....but I seem to remember that "c" ring fitting in a slot in the LH crank bearing.  Quite how it works on controlling movement, I am not sure.

I recall there is more than one "C" ring on the crankshaft bearings. One on each side, right and left. If the crankshaft is moving that much laterally then Houston, we have a problem.

Maybe I did not understand Hochkoenig. I did not think there was much room in the cases, between the bearing support webs for the crankshaft to move around once running.

Hock, more pictures?

have you checked the alignment of the chain-wheel and the sprocket? Check if there is side-play of the crank, please...

Also, I have in mind that there are two different primary covers for series 1 engines, but I may be wrong here... Piet?

Well, this mark it is on the spot where the big Nut from the Sprocket used to sit... Since the Case can be from another Engine, for me it look like somebody forgot to fix the Nut tightly or the washer was not turn to safe the Nut... If the Nut gets loosen, the Chain on the Sprocket can rubber the Case... Must make a lot of noise... Too many stupit "Mechanics" out there... Anyway, the Chrankshaft cannot move that far to the left site...

Have you got the end of that tape on engine /primary case,  mating face ?

Looks to me like you still have a problem there ??

Machine the outer teeth run off and run a Duplex  ;)

Seen a few like that, most likely caused by a loose and worn chain whanging around on the overrun. Would not be worried about it.

If the marks won't line up with the sprocket done up, I'd assume the Jesus nut was loose at some time during the bikes' (seemingly) abused life.  Might have let the sprocket wander back and forth on the crank, chewing up the crank splines and the cover in the process.  Having a loose chain whanging( :D) around will not help matters, especially with a stone deaf rider.

Seen so many strange things in these engines, so not really surprised... :o :o

Not much to say about the cases but the chains are dubious.

Not only are they the "small pin" type but I cannot see any markings, although
that may be my bad eyesight.

Best fit "big pin" iwis for best results.
