Primary drive crank sprocket

Hi Andy

Wolfgang is also bringing me some RGS stuff when he comes this trip, maybe we will run into each other picking up parts....

I had the worn splines problem with the primary drive front pulley on the LyteDrive belt drive conversion, with the thankful exception that it is the teeth in the pulley which wore and started to slop around, rather than the crank end splines. I have now purchased a second air impact gun, with multiple torque settings, up to 600 foot pounds torque for removal, and up to 400 foot pounds for assembly, so I guess based on what Piet advised, I will raise my tightening torque from 90 foot pounds to around 125 foot pounds next time I deal with the front primary drive sprocket.

Andychain's Mercedes duplex primary chain is working perfectly in the 79 1200, solid, no slop, no apparent wear so far.

My 79 1200 is now approaching 100,000 kms, all seems well, still running great, glittery and sparkly in its new disco green livery :D

as an aside, Princess Auto has a big sale on right now, the big floor standing sand blasting cabinet is presently on sale for half price, I picked one up yesterday, worth having look for your new garage!

I used Loctite on a slightly loose (worn splines) primary sprocket.  I emailed their technical people and was quite surprised to find the regular blue stuff recommended.  I cleaned everything carefully and it held just fine, with the advantage that it could be disassembled.

Reggie,

Did you use Loctite 243 on the splines?

Regards,
Gerald

Yeah, just cleaned splines and sprocket thoroughly applied a little Loctite to each spline (and of course to the thread) and nipped it all up to 80 ft/lb.

Held just fine, but I'd still contact their technical people just in case.

I picked up the new sprocket from Wolfgang last night.

Looks like I got off very lucky, as the new sprocket takes out virtually all the slop.  So it appears that the great majority of wear was on the splines of the sprocket, not the crank end.  I will still use some Loctite 660 on reassembly, as well as one of Andy's Merc duplex chains.

Cheers,
Andy
