Problems with Ignitech and 120 degrees / inductive pickups

Hello there!
We tried to fit an Ignitech TCIP4 v88 4ch. to a 120 degree with the original inductive pickups. Pickup 1 is connected to in1, pickups 2&3 connected to in2. The engine only runs on cylinder 1&2, cylinder 3 doesn't ignite correctly. cylinder 2&3 always fire at the same time.
Settings are as follows:

The synchronisation settings are as follows: 2 lobes  3 coils, we also tried 1 lobe 3 coils
Ch1: max advance 1 start advance 1 2nd edge
Ch2: max advance 1 start advance 1 2nd edge  2nd pickup
Ch3: max advance 2 start advance 2 2nd edge  2nd pickup
1 ignition per revolution
Polarities of all pickups are the same.
We tried different settings we got from Redax, the Ignitech setting you can choose in the software and a setting we got from ignitech directly.
I think the key to sucesss seems to be the page where you set the synchronization method. Can anybody explain to me how the setting of the "number of lobes" really work and what it does? I read something about "virtual lobes" here in the forum and don?t really understand it. Or does anybody have a setup file that definitely works?
Hope for any idea,

H.-C.

If its a 120 shouldn't it have three 'in's; Pickup 1 to in1, pickup 2 to in2 and pickup 3 to in3?
I might be missing the bleeding obvious! ???

No Terry. It only has two pickup inputs. Two of the pickups (2 & 3) go to the same input and the Ignitech box works out which plug to fire.

It's a bit of a mystery to me how it works. So I tend to rely on advice from Ignitech. There's probably a simple fix like selecting the correct options from the various menus.

My 120 Laverda is set up for Hall effect triggers, so probably has different pickup settings. But in the "Motorbike type" pull-down list on the "Bike" tab, I selected "Laverda 3x120".

Thanks for the eye-opener. I have the DMC 2 system on my 120, with the optical sensor. no complicated electricerty bits in a hot vibrating environment (come in Chris).
Learn something new every day! :D

Hello,

Do you have this setting "Laverda 3x120"?

I have four channel version 88 Ignitech box with original Bosch pickups. Every time the program is opened, some settings must be set manually or they will lost. This is why I always check every setting before I push the programming button.

These are just some general stuff with Ignitech units and Bosch pickups:

-Ignitech ignition box for Hall pickups is a different unit and has different kind of inputs than a standard unit for inductive pickups. Hall version is available from Ignitech with special request.

-Quite often original Bosch pickup wires are in bad condition. They can be replaced with silicon insulated cables.

-Be sure you have correct polarity for pickups. I recommend to use Auto setting first to check the polarity, then to set it manually for correct value. I have adapter cable from Ignitech, for some reason it had negative polarity. Incorrect polarity will cause very strange advance curve.

-I consider Ignitech being internally single channel ignition unit with internal distributor. Because pickup number one is connected to separate channel it knows how to synchronize the internal "distributor". It doesn't give any sparks before the distributor is synchronized.
