Question for specialists 500

At the opening of my engine Alpino, two surprises for the moment:
There is a camshaft "S1", and no balance system (just the bearing).

My question: This balance system is really useful for a road machine?

thank you

I'm no specialist, but the early 500 didn't have a balance shaft.

Also browsed this

http://www.tonyfoale.com/Articles/EngineBalance/EngineBalance.pdf

whilst munching my lunchtime sandwich.

There's quite an interesting section around page 16 and 17 (twins and triples) and it specifically mentions Laverda :-)

It also uses words like "reciprocal" and "sinusoidal" which means I'm out of my depth!

Yes, don't think they would have gone to the trouble to install it if not...

As Harry has already stated, early 500s did not have any form of balancing system, nor any provision for one.  The system appeared later on, necessitating new crankcases, which were altered once again on the clutch side later on.

Hi Bertrand,
The cams in a standard Alpino are marked 14.  The S1 cams were fitted to the Montjuic and Formula 500 bikes.
When these bikes were raced the balance shafts were often removed as they sometimes failed at sustained high revs ( plus 10k ) .
So, my guess is that your Alpino engine may have spent some time on the track.  What is the engine number ?

Thank you guys, you confirm what I thought.
I think this engine had a preparation with the "S1". I expect to see the pistons ...

But if I have not dreamed, I think Piero told me that the balancing system was removed on machines track.
This bike (# 2164) is the new type (with balance). It is for this reason that I'm talking about bearing up in the primary chaincase.
If you have a photo of the open engine, thank you in advance. And if someone has the missing piece ...  ;)

Another question, I make a flywheel extractor alternator. It will be on both sides of the rotor (7 mm) and the crankshaft. This is a good way (if not have a special tool)?

The advice given to me from the forum when I made some inquiries about 500's and 600's was:
Ask Bob!

He seems to be the last word on these machines, and I think that he knows what is what with setting them up.
