Rear brake

Hi all I am having problems with the rear brake on my 750 strike. Would a warped disc cause the caliper to overheat and lock up, this is what happened last year I have changed the caliper and mastercylinder and checked the disc with a dti which seemed ok at the start of the season. Yesterday morning went for a ride about 70 miles and it was ok in the afternoon went out again about 20 miles and it locked up overheated the disc now seems warped would this cause this to happen .

Make sure your foot isnt touching the pedal, common issue on a dirtbike. The only bit the havnt changed is the footpeg links, better more clearance than less.

Hi Chris
Warping of the disc will have been caused by the pads dragging on the disc, causing it to overheat.  Check for binding of the brake pedal/master cylinder linkage as Vince suggests, or a gummed up caliper that doesn't allow the pads to free off after the brake is applied.  If those checkout OK, then the master cylinder itself may need an overhaul to get rid of the muck that forms if brake fluid isn't regularly changed.

Happened to a friends 750S back in the day too.  The warped disk is a result, not a cause.  The cause is that for some reason the master cylinder cannot return fully and 'vent' the system to atmospheric pressure.  With the hydraulic system 'closed' heat expands the fluid, extending the pistons, dragging the pads and creating yet more heat - a runaway condition.

In my friend's case it was because the little rubber stopper for the brake lever vibrated out a bit and prevented the lever from fully returning.  Check over your master cylinder, lever mechanism etc.

New master cylinders can be surprisingly cheap, like $55.

In addition to the above; check the pads, if they are worn into a wedge shape they may be causing the pistons to jam in the bores, if possible (assuming the rear brake on a Strike is single opposed pistons) change the pads around or better still, replace with new. How do I know? Happened on my long suffering RGS.

thanks for the info , I have took the caliper off all seems ok but I am struggling to bleed the system there doesn,t seem to be any air in the fluid but the foot pedal travels a long way before the brake applies pressure .I am beginning to think I have a problem with the master cylinder and I am in the process of getting a new disc so I will probably get a cylinder repair kit mind you the cylinder is not a year old yet . Thanks again for the info will let you know how it go,s

Hi Chris,
I had the same problem on my 3C last week: took the Calipers apart (they looked fine); took the m/cylinder apart and that looked ok too. Replaced the tired looking hoses and the problem went away...
