Reassembling Triple Clamp

After a front end rebuild I'm reassembling everything.  I seem to be missing a fork yoke washer or two..

I installed the lower triple clamp ok, and used the under yoke nut with a large washer to tighten it up to the bearings.

I then install the upper triple clamp, and when tightening the upper yoke nut it bottoms out against the lower nut.  In other words, with the upper nut tightened as far as it can go, the upper triple clamp can rotate back and forth.  Looks like I need about 1-2mm of washer to take up the space

In looking at the parts fiche online it doesn't seem that I'm missing any washers or spacers..    Is there some magic that I'm overlooking?

Thanks, Tim

Nothing missing, the top yoke clamps to the nut using the pinch bolt, it is not supposed to be pulled down tight with the top nut.

Just wondering, did you install a bearing spacer in the steerer tube above the outer race of the lower (tapered roller) bearing? The standard spacer looks like a slightly dished big washer, about 4mm thick. It always gets damaged because you pound on it when you drive out the outer race from the frame. I've always hammered it back flat(tish) and reused it, but a new one is better (readily available from usual sources). One of my mates in Australia had the same problem as you, had run out of thread on the stem, and sure enough he hadn't installed the spacer washer.
Some parts diagrams for Ceriani front ends even show a similar spacer washer under the top bearing as well, which also gives a bit more weather/dust sealing (maybe). It wouldn't be too hard to tell whether you need 0, 1 or 2 spacers, measure the distance between the top and bottom bearing seats in your frame, compare to the length of the stem with top nut installed. Hafta pull it apart again, though.

Hi Ken

I didn't change the bearings but I'll pull it apart if see if there's a spacer.

Thanks, Tim
