Any tips or tricks for reapplying paint to the recessed lettering in either the switch gear or on the engine cases?    ie smear paint and then quickly wipe with flattened rag.    Any suggestions for the paint type?

Thanks, Tim

Hi, Tim.
For the case covers I used common automotive paint.
Unexpectedly it withstands the heat.
For wiping away I applied some spiritus to the rag.

if you use a VERY slim brush (there are even single hair brushes available...), it helps to reduce what you need to wipe away...

Revel colors do work well...

thanks for the replies.

and Ernesto, thanks for the avatar.  There really is no replacement for displacement is there?

I've found using paper towel is somewhat better than cloth to wipe off the excess. The fibers in the cloth will wick solvent below the surface of the piece and pull paint out of the area you want paint in. The towel I've had best results with is not real soft or fluffy, sort of like the industrial toilet paper in public restrooms. It helps to experiment with drying time for neatest removal and clean edges.

good suggestions.

the folks over on the GT750 "tea kettle" forum suggest Humbrol No 18 orange as the ticket.

Surely Laverda used RAL 2010. :D

Haven't tried it but thinking about the problem how about using PVA paint (like the copydex lid-brush glue you used at school - wood glue is the same - the stuff dried on your fingers when you were doing art and you could peel it off like a layer of skin to get you through spelling.. or was that just me?)

Try painting 2-3 coats on the black outer part avoiding the inset red letter part, then paint the recessed letters red and peel off the dry PVA (it doesn't stick hard like resin type glues but you could use a hairdryer if is dificult to remove - it would not damage the black paint finish, and should work a treat, ..probably).

Finish off by cutting a potato, dipping it in black paint and press against the outer part before - show it to Miss Burgess and if she agrees you're done, head out to the plaground for some football card swapsies ..

There are liquid paint masking materials available in craft and hobby shops as well as house paint suppliers if you want bulk amounts.

They work great when painting around glass in windows and doors as you just slap the stuff on the glass without worrying to much about getting it onto the area you are painting, slap the paint on when the film is dry without the need for care on the edges, cut the film around the edge of the window with a blade and peel the film off leaving clear glass and perfect paint to the edge.

Should work the same on the bike.

For the lettering on the switch gear I used a point tipped permanent marker pen they are available in most colors, I used silver and it looks like new . The lettering on the engine cases you could use a square tipped pen permanent marker.  Arts and craft shops also have similar type pens in a multitude of tip sizes and are loaded with acrylic paint, Cheers Dave.

Umm?  Not wanting to rain on your parade (or is that pee on your bonfire  :D ), but wouldn't it need to be orange to look like new?  ::)
