replace cracked Dellorto's on a 180

I am sure that this has been done before, but I havent actually logged in by who or even when, so here goes. Most spigot mounted 180 type carbs are now worn out, if not even sufferring the dreaded cracked stubs from "wiggling" them off the alloy manifolds which are shrouded in that hard nylon spacer for heat transfer reduction.

I have binned mine (no they arent on ebay) and replaced with RGS type. They are more or less the same carb except that the mount is on a rubber manifold (when on an RGS) those manifolds are expensive and they perish, used ones even command a high price second hand.I fitted mine on Jota 120 inlet manifolds (genuine) which are basically an adapter for a tubular rubber connector, from the cylinder heads oval flange, new O rings on them of course, I used genuine parts again, which are available from Slaters, but you could use a plain rubber hose, I removed the bakelite spacers (shorter 7mmm studs needed) since you need the extra 5mm or so of clearance under the centre carb, and the rubbers will do a good job of reducing heat transfer,(like any mosdern bike) and bolted everything on, stainless hose clamps (Slaters again) complete the job.The 7mmm studs came from a scooter shop by buying M7x50 hex set screws for the seat on Lambretta for about a quid, and cutting the right amount off the end, keeping plated end on show externally and the raw cut end inside the head (with a touch of copper slip)

here are a few pictures, if Simones tuition still works, we will see, but as there are plenty of RGS carbs about, I see this as an economical way out, even though the Jota 120 inlet manifolds will be hard to come by.There is a manon ebay (handle Elegog) who makes turned/milled inlet manifolds and I am sure he could adjust his procedurre to make the shorter and slightly different Jota 120 types. These have a double groove in them which locate in the genuine rubber tube.

no, you need to learn how to post a decent size picture so us old folk with our reading glasses can actually see the subject matter
posting photos at 25-30 kb is not really the way to go, you need to resize them to 150 kb or use a Photobucket link which is even better

Simon, get your butt over to Clem's shack again and teach him more tricks

I totally understand where you are coming from in the original posting regards solving the problem of the original equipment cast ally inlet stubs cracking, they do that. There are a number of fixes as suggested, my own is using Andy Wagner's billet machined inlet stubs (further turned/blended from 32 to 36 mm to suit my CR head), still solid mounted c/w heat bakelite (?) heat shield. My Jota's Dells are simply worn out, I am not going to spend any more money on them.

The eminently sensible replacement of the time served Dells is a set of Mikunis...

You are a hard task master Red! No wonder you run those drilling rigs.

I was pretty thrilled when Clem got the hang of sticking small pictures up! I think he is the first to acknowledge that 'puters are not his forte.

I will see if I can set up something.

So what would one of those set you back jetted compared to new Dellortos? Are they much better (or worse).
thanks Olly

1000 Euro for three with all the bars and linkages and gubbins I'm guessing...I'll drop them a note to ask how much for 2 jetted for an SF1.

Available new from Topham, spaced and jetted for Laverdas.

Depending on what extras you buy (K&Ns, twin pull throttle etc) the cost should be around 1000 euros.

Some folk sell refurbished (and spaced/jetted for Laverdas) Mikunis, like Redax.

Possible to do it yourself if you buy a set off ebay.

Both Redax and myself sell kits made up from brand new Mikuni carb banks, both Redax and myself also offer a superior solution to the Topham effort regarding fuel feed to the carbs. Both Redax and myself supply the kit as bolt on complete ready to go with billet machined manifolds, twistgrip, cables etc.
Doing it yourself with used carbs bought of ebay can very quickly work out more expensive than buying a kit ready to go if you do not have your own machine shop, Mikuni needles, jets etc. are more expensive than Dellorto parts and little things like mixture screws are often seized into carb bodies on used banks.

What's your superior solution to the fuel feed?
2 inlets?
Mine has that from Topham direct.
