Replacement wheels and ideas for rebuild.

Maitland

Welcome to the bright side, funny side and very addictive side

sent you a PM with some articles attached.
One from Red on GSXR wheel conversion from the now defunct Laverdapedia forum
And one from Doug Home on radials on older bikes from Laverdamania.com
Laverdaforum has a rather low attachment limit which prevented me attaching them.

Lots of helpful people here with great views and knowledge

Steven
in a still shaky NZ, over 1060 after shocks and climbing ??? ??? ??? :o ::)

Hi Maitland,
I don't mean to worry but around the time your bike was put together the factory decided to
use different bearings in the crank shaft, with dire results.A lot bikes had to have their cranks replaced.
What worrys me is your bike has only done 4000 miles and may still have a faulty crank .A lot of bikes were not automatically recalled. There again your bike might be OK ,correct crank or the crank was replaced years ago.
Give Richard Slater a ring and tell him your engine number,he might have records giving details of engines that were affected.
Others on this site will I dare say be able to offer advice on the subject.

Thanks for the warning Andy,

I did know of this, phoned Slaters to get more details about what went wrong before I bought the bike. I have documentation showing it was re-built with new crankshaft bearings back in 1981.

Take a tiny bit of care following Mr Pauls advise, and "while your at it jobs' fast become complete bare frame rebuilds.Hows the riding season going Paul, you getting any?

Hi Vince

I broke my left foot and amputated a toe about 5 weeks ago in a minor non motorcycle related accident. Docs sewed the toe back on. I have been on crutches. Anyways, I wasn't able to get a  shoe or boot on until just a few days ago, I have a long fall ride set up for today, hoping I can shift, as all four of the bikes around here are set up for left side shift. The easiset to shift is the ZX 14, so that is what I am taking out today.....

Err that sounds painful and distantly horrible to boot, that just slipped out, hope you get some before the snow flys

I guess there's no point in asking if you know any good lawyers? :D Broken foot, amputated toe, wow, just gotta prove it was someone else's fault ... but you may have already thought about this ::)
Best wishes anyway, hurts like hell, most of us have been there. And it sure hurts a lot more, and longer, the older we get!

Hi all,

Just gone through the info I have on the bike again.

Built in 1978 imported from Europe in 1981.

Seems the original colour was blue, engine problem occurred just out of warranty 1981-82, left until sold on in 2001, crankshaft bearings replaced, low compression pistons and mild camshaft, sprayed silver with TS seat, tail piece and side panels by new owner.

Thanks gain for all your help, the friendly response has been a real eye opener. Steven has emailed me details on has modify the wheels to fit, and there's pictures too, so even I can can understand.

Can't wait to see what happens when I ask about tuning the engine :)

Cheers,

Maitland

I'll never get the damn bike finished :(

Tim, I have replied  to your post about wheels for sale but the email keeps bouncing back to me(?).
I shall have a closer look at the ones in Hertford now I know what I need. Thanks.

Hi Maitland

for my 84 RGS I located and fitted a set of last model Astralites, in gold. 3 inch front, 4 inch rear, and with some fiddling around I was even able to use a stock speedo drive.

for my 79 1200, I think the stock "thick web" wheels look a little "heavy" for my tastes, so at the moment I have the later "thin web" wheels from the RGS fitted, and I think they look better. and again they retain the stock speedo drive.

I looked at the Suzuki wheels for either of my triples, and they just don't do it for me. If I was after that look, and wider wheels, I would hunt down and fit a set of Laverda SFC 1000 cast wheels.

It is easy to fit better brakes discs and calipers even to stock wheel setups, which I have done on both my triples.

maybe best of all would be a pair of wire wheels, in whatever rim width you want. The front wire wheel hub from an earlier disc brake wire wheel Laverda 1000 triple will work, complete with speedo drive, and you can fit an EBC brake disc, or any of the Brembo discs that fit, plus 4 piston Brembo calipers, no problem.

For a rear wire wheel, the Laverda rear wires were all for drum brake, except the unfortunately exceedingly rare rear wire wheel hub used on the Laverda SFC 1000 Classic. Fortunately, a rear wire wheel hub adapted for a rear disc brake is now available from several sources, including in Italy, and from Wolfgang Haerter at Columbia Car and Cycle in Canada. I have been mulling over buying the hubs from Wolfgang, then look at rims, either the classics from the day, or modern construction. I was actually thinking polished and clear coated hubs, polished stainless steel spokes, and black anodized rims would look sharp, but personal tastes will vary..... Hubs and building a pair of wire wheels will be considerably more money than sourcing and converting a set of old Suzuki wheels, but much more unique with triple discs and on a bike not originally fitted with wires..... 8)

Thanks for that Paul.

Bit slow replying but had the lads back from 'uni' for a long weekend so not been on the P.C.

I see where you're coming from, a nice set of bronze Dymags would be my first choice but funds aint available :( (see above sentence). Plans include large bore exhaust (3 into 2 or 3 into 1?), seat and fairing, frame powder coated, forks need re-chroming, etc, etc; ?.?.?.

I had thought of fitting wire wheels as I have a couple of spare Rickman wheels in the loft, unfortunately the rims are too small and fitting new ones is ?180.00 each. I have found a pair of G.S.X.R. 1100 wheels, rear disc, sprocket carrier and rubbers from the good old boys a J25 here in Hertford. For ?50.00 I can live with the look, which I don't think is too bad and I can fit a good selection of tyre sizes on them.

Speedo drive is not so important as I intend to go digital, not sure if the C.R.M.C. will like it, may have to put a bag over it's head to keep the scrutineers happy :)

Four piston calipers and remote reservoir levers are not allowed either, so that option is out. But I do have a pair of classic Magnesium alloy Lockheed calipers, wondering if they would be a better option than the Brembo calipers.

Cheers,

MAitland.

P.S. If anyone is at a loss for something to do............ C.R.M.C at Cadwell this weekend, I'm Parading the Rickman and thrashing the 500 along with my brother and a bunch of mates.
