Hi all, I recently purchased a Laverda Ghost 668. Battery is shot. Can I change the battery myself (im fairly handy/technical) or is this best left to a mechanic. I understand that the fuel tank may need to come out to access the battery?

Also how long would it take to change the battery? What is involved to do this?

Many thanks in advance
Steve

Hi,  It's a fiddly job,as with a lot of more modern bikes space is limited!
Tank does not need to come out, but the inner mudguard does, easy enough ,screws may(ok, will be)rusty, sniping carefully the ties holding the cables, disconnect earth from batt first, then pos, batt will( hopefully) slide out to rear, may be some packing pieces etc. Replace the large cables to starter( if not already done) with bigger ones, getting the cover off the top of the starter can be a pain, then pop in new batt( would recommend oddessey or similar - can't remember which one)
Make sure it's not abutting anything-sometimes the sub- frame bolts have been replaced with longer ones, worth a look-use packing foam etc,pos cables then neg, check all surrounding cables for heat damage, cable tie up cables carefully. Make sure she starts ok, then refit mudguard with new screws and away you go.......might be worth fitting a charger kit( ctek for oddessey )
Cheers will

I had some trouble with a Motobatt battery that was supposed to fit a 750S. It didn't fit. If you have the time get the old battery out first and make sure the replacement is the same size. Marty (mgordonvegas8) on this forum used to sell upgraded battery cable kits and a good writeup on how to install them. This upgrade improves the engine starting.

Typical battery for these bikes is either a PC680 which fits pretty tight but matches original config.

There are also members on the zanelist who reference the shorai lithium 14 AH and Westco agm battery (apparently you can get them mail order from Tayna if you are in UK).

Personally I stick with the PC680 and attach a battery tender to the posts to keep it charged up.

Cheers
