There's no spring in my clutch slave cylinder and it works perfectly, no need for pumping, the clutch is lightish and always feels the same.
As I have one of these low drag bleeding nipples (broken off) I had to bleed it roughly by holding at the right angle and trying to get as much air out when putting the slave cylinder back in. I know there's some air in there still, maybe it's acting as the spring? Doesn't seem to affect tjhe operation though.
