RGS Headlamp Bulb

Reckon it doesn't matter how good your lights are, still won't stop that roo jumping out in front of you; most probably let you get out an 'oh fuck' instead of an 'oh f...'. but I guess if you live in a place where wildlife isn't an issue, the brighter and more focussed the beam the better.

We've got plenty of deer (big ones!) with horns and that, so good lights are essential at night, but really the best thing is to SLOW RIGHT DOWN.

If you want to go the whole hog and have real lights get an HID conversion kit and add half the unit (sadly only seem to come for cars). Plenty of room to hide the ballast behind the fairing.

Most HID H4 conversions don't work as well as they should due to focussing issues- they tend to use some sort of shield arrangement to change from main to dipped.  Much better in separate H7 type lights.  TBH, if I know I'm going to be out at night I'd most likely take the GS- it's got the equivalent of something like 500W halogen when everything is on :o

I don't ride with head lights on during the day so they rarely get used.

Yikes!  Why not?  An old colour blind git like me won't see you!

have some Osram nightbreaker H7 s in the GT and a permanent LED side light ,the benefits of a rewire, but puts the others to shame now though.

You ought to try LED headlights. You can now get 4500 lumen twin beam H4 bulbs that only draw ~45 Watts, last for thousands of hours (the 100W halogens burn out after just a few hundred hours), and are WAY brighter than any halogen bulb. I don't know how good the beam pattern is going to be with an RGS reflector, but some of them are actually adjustable for focusing, so if you're lucky they might produce a nice tight and well cut off but extremely bright beam.
I have one in in my TRX850. The original 55W H4 produced so little usable light the thing was just terrifying to ride at night, I couldn't see a bloody thing. With the LED bulb I felt fairly safe riding Australian roads at night at legal(ish) speeds. I might just have been lucky, though....

Looking into them currently.  Major obstacle seems to be the sheer size of the things!  The electronics and cooling vent add up to around 60-80mm behind(!) the bulb, rarely that much space in an old headlamp bucket, or between RGS light unit and fairing bracket.  Bummer...

I tried the HID bulb in my RGS and it was a dismal failure. Nice and bright but the low beam cutoff wasn't any good and had lots of upset people coming the other way flashing at me to dip my beam. Would like to try and LED one though. I currently have the +100% philips bulb and with relays it quite good and legal.
