sf1 swinging arm

To properly measure it you really need there to be no grease in your bushes as that will mask freeplay. I once measured freeplay at the axle of a new (needle roller swingarm) triple and it was 1mm.

Always measure mouvement with the shocks out of thier lower mounts otherwise they're restricting mouvement. As far as I'm concerned, there shouldn't be any mouvement.

If the stock rubber bushes are still fitted, 1mm sounds more than reasonable.  :D  Check if there is a grease nippel fitted to the underside of the fulcrum tube, no nippel = rubber bushes.

Even if bronze bushes or needle rollers are fitted, 1mm at the wheel spindle will hardly show up at the fulcrum in form of wear, etc.  A good squirt of axle grease should take up most of that and keep you going for quite some time.

thank you all for valuable advises. here what i'll do :

1. remove lower shock mounts and attempt to measure free play again
2. generously grease (i think i have bronze bushes fitted).
3. re-check
4. hope for the best...

new question: considering free play would be bound by both wear at bushes - axle interface and bushes - frame fixing points, would you think that shimming here (i.e. between bushes and frame) would help recovery (part of) free play? thanks again

I've got the bronze bushes in my SF - When I was racing it  I regularly loosened the s/arm nuts, pumped in grease until it squirted out of ends by the frame then "torqued" the nuts up to "bleeding tight". S/arm still in this bike untouched after 20+ years. - regards - phil

No.

Axial play is rarely an issue as the axle and bushes are normally the correct length and should fit into the frame snugly.  Should the bearing face of the bush to the frame be excessively worn, it is bound to be knackered radially as well...

Most wear occurs between axle and bush, you could cut a Coke can in strips and insert that, I've seen that a few times! :o  ::)
