SFC1000 cam chain replacement

Wise men..

I'm about to replace the camchain on my SFC1000 at 100,000km.
Valve clearances reasonable by my measure (one exhaust clearance a bit tight at .0085"). Have the good new Iwis chain.
Been a fair while since I did the camchain on this bike (50,000 was some time back). 180deg engine is easy. I cant recall how I fed the chain in last time on this bike.
Dont want to have to remove one or both cams so they dont clash with pistons. Dropping off the cam guide thing in the sump seems a bit unnecessary (but might be simplest of the three choices). Feeding in the new chain hooked onto the old one while rotating the crank and cams in sync to avoid clashing valves with pistons seems painful.

Advice please??
Thanks,
Andre

Hey Andre, I'd remove the cam guide thing in the sump [no need to turn the crank then] and cam chain tensioner, feed some wire down from the top inlet side, drop the new chain down the exhaust side and pull it back up the inlet side. Piece of piss. As you've dropped the oil to remove the cam guide thing in the sump it gets a new dose of oil at the same time :D

There's no point on a 120 cam where all valves are closed, and trying to keep everything in synch with the chain open sounds like a nightmare to me.  I always just remove the cams and correct any slight clearance errors while I'm at it.  I connect a used chain (you can source a bit of crappy 06B industrial if you don't have an old one) and wind that through then connect the new chain to it and wind it backwards back in - keeps the clip in the same place that way (thanks for that tip Piet!).  Easy job with a helper to keep some tension on the chain or wind the crank.  Always put your good new clip on LAST, after checking clearances are in the ballpark and you've not accidentally transposed some shims/buckets.

IMHO much easier than removing the exhaust and chain access plate, I always find it a right royal pita to get a chain back on the crank in the right place if it comes off.

Your right Steve, I forgot about having to remove the exhaust! Last time I did it my motor was sitting on the bench. Thinking back, last time I did it with motor in frame I connected the new chain to the old and cranked it through with the valves all in a neutral position, another reason the rephase a 120 back to a manly 180 :D

Thanks for the replies guys. Sounds like cams out. May as well get those valve clearances spot on at same time. Im getting more into looking for easiest way and less into fiddling. Tempting to look at cam timing, but maybe next time.
I dont have either of my manuals at the moment. At risk of dumb question, the cam marks are for lh piston at tdc? Jeez I hope thats not too dumb..

Rob - Motodd engine fully stripped. That copper head gasket was fine. Problem was k-liners were all loose on exhaust side. Should have checked with Red prior, not after.. And I'm taking the crank to Reds for a holiday. Getting those pesky engine mount brackets sorted while cases empty.

Regards,
Andre
