SFC1000 replacement brake disks

Bruce and all,

thanks for your help, really appreciated. Have contacted a friend of mine asking him if he can do the machining if I supply the 16 x 5 replacement floaters. He is not very happy to do so I must say and I might consider going a different route or asking someone else...  ::)

What prices do you all pay for the oversize-buttons? found a source for roughly 4,50? for the 16 x 5mm. Cheap or not?

cheers and thanks, keep you all posted as soon as I have a solution.

I paid around 4.50 euro when I bought my sets
few years ago now and at the time the exchange rate from euro to AUD sucked
even now that works out at $6.10 per set which to me is still way too dear
I did a few searches trying to find an alternative supplier, found a few but they were even more expensive
search for TPO, USA based so may be cheaper for you now the US$ has tanked

not cheap when you start to replace every pin in all 6 rotors

attached a photo of the set up I use to machine the holes
I don't see why your friend is not happy to do them, is a simple and straight forward machining task
pull all the old pins except for 3 that holds everything in place
machine what holes are empty
install new pins as you machine them, don't have to have the clips on at that stage, just ensures everything stays lined up, stops the two parts from moving
once finished, completely install all the new pins except for 3, remove remaining 3 old pins, set back up, etc
piece of piss

tell him to snap out of it

Hi Red,

thanks, I think he is just overloaded with other things and does not want to make a bracket (again) which gets used just for 6 rotors...  ::)

I have seen a set of floaters on ebay btw. (10 units) which are 16,5mm for just about 24?. Have mailed the seller if they are 4,5 or 5,0mm. 8 sets would make it 80 buttons for about 200?, which makes it just about 33?/Disk (and some spare floaters that could be sold on...).

Keep you posted about which size they are... :-)

Bruce K, Looking at your brake setup I think the rotor setup and probably the wheel is for a Suzuki GSXR. Take good care of it as it seems the wheels are now worth their weight in gold. The calipers are probably from an early[90-92] Ducati 851,900.Good calipers with 32/32 pistons but were superceeded in about 92 with 32/34 piston gold colored calipers. The pads are the same between the two.

Standard Suzuki GSXR discs have 5 stud mountings, these discs have 6 stud mounting.
The discs look like Brembo to me, but I could easily be wrong.

Brucie,

Those disks are the Goldline Brembo 320mm from the late 80's to early 90's or so.  They are effectively 320mm versions of the "old pattern" 70's/80's brembo mounting dimensions, and were available as aftermarket upgrade parts for a while.  I have a set on my RGA, bought new by a guy in Sweden from a Brembo catalog.  The only bikes I know for sure that use them were Bimotas from about 1988-93 using Oscam wheels - YB4,YB6, YB8, early DB2.

Sometime in the early 90's there was a general change to a wider wheel hub and flatter disks with less offset and a smaller mounting boss/bolt circle.  In Bimota terms, this happened with the change to Oscam Antera wheels in about 93, and on Ducati when they started using the ugly Brembo wheels in about 1991.  No Ducatis I know of use deep offset 320mm floaters.  Similarly, all of the Zane Laverdas used the newer style flatter Brembo disks on their Merchesini wheels.

As wdietz said, calipers are very early 4-piston Brembos, as used on very early 90's Ducs including 851, and also on various Bimotas including YB4 and YB6.

cheers

link to TPO disc buttons from USA

still $7 per button though X 12 per disc!

Hi Ralph,

thanks, that makes it - together with shipping, customs etc. - quiet high in price, as I can have them for 4,37? and with the ?uro beeing 1,32 roughly, that makes it "just" 5,77USD - including tax already.

and if the 16,5mm are 5mm wide, these come even for almost half of that...  :o

Hi Maurice,

Yep it was on e-bay about 6 months ago. Imported from USA.
I am very happy with it has less than 17,000 ks on it and still feels quite tight.
Since I have had it I have painted the wheels black (after checking them out) and put on the RS36's and Wolfgang exhaust.

Wdietz and Steve,
Thanks for the feedback.
As Grant pointed out the mounting is definately 6 stud and I think this would rule out Suzuki.
Maybe they were a special order from marvic???

Is there any weight difference between the 32 / 32 and the 32 /34 Brmbo Brakes?

Cheers
Bruce

OK - some update...

Spiegler responded that they will do the repair for 150?/set. Having in mind, that the cheapest floaters I found cost 4,50? each (x 12 Floaters x 2 disks => 108?; most where even at 5,00? or above, which makes it 120? for the floaters alone), this sounds very reasonable to me to be honest. They offered also 2 new Discs for a total of 400?, which I think is also a good price, comparing it to the cheapes offer I found on the net (EBC) asking roughly 15% more. Not sure though if they do international trading?!? Anyway, here is the Contact:

SPIEGLER Bremstechnik GmbH         Fon:         07667 / 90664 ? 0
Krummholzstr.5                            Fax:         07667 / 90664 ? 29

I think I'll give it a go and let them repair mine...

Thanks to all for helping!

Lothar,
remember to post some photos once done.
Were the discs they offered the same design, or their own make?

I did not check that, Grant, but suppose they are their own brand. They can make almost any sizes really, Andre (the fast one from SPA...) got some made for his GSX-R-Wheels with some special sizes, almost for the same price...

OK - here is an update after I sent my disks to Spiegler...

They sent me an e-mail today telling me the disks are beyond repair, they can only fix-bolt them, but without any warrenty. I am a bit surprised, as I clearly stated the kind of repair I wanted, the grade of damage they have etc.

I am now in touch with a guy that can deliver 16 x 5 mm floaters for less than 3 ?/piece. He will check with his preferred workshop if they can and are willing to make the necessary holders to get the discs fixed to be able to drill them accordingly. Keep you posted on the progress...

disappointed, Lothar
