The engine is fully run in so I am going to start using Synthetic oil,yep its an oil thread. I had a look at the Penrite site and found a 20w 50 fully synthetic
called MC4 V twin 20w50 100%PAO Ester, plenty of Zinc and looked great so I  rang my local Repco and they never heard of it. So I rang Penrite, seems there in the process of actually making the stuff, not available yet. So we have a chat and he tells me there MC4 15 w 50 100% PAO Ester is available and very close to the same. I find a place that sells it, $45 so that sounds ok. I arrive and have a look, yep its there BUT its only in 2.5l bottles for $45 and I need 2 so thats $90, O shit. After a minutes thinking and simple maths That's 5 litres for $90 and I need 3 litres so its about $50 a change and I have nearly enough oil for 2 changes so not as PAINFUL as I first though. The tech bloke went through the data sheet and even though its 15 wt its viscosity is very similar to the 20wt variety on there temperature gradient.

You'll probably get oil leaks with synthetic. The bloody stuff seems to find its way out of an engine that would be oil tight with mineral oil.

Agree, it went through my k1100rs like it was a sieve.

I do have an issue with a leak from the rocker box, hopefully sorted tomorrow.
We have a ride on Sunday so we well see

In my opinion Vince fully syn is a waste of money for our old motors. I use a penrite semi syn HPR10gas at $45 for 5lt. change at 1500 kays. Fully syn is suppose to give you more miles between changes but I'd rather change more frequently knowing the oil is cleaner. Next lot of oil, once I use up my supply of HPR10 gas I'm going back to HPRgas mineral.
Have done around 400,000 kays on my Lavies over the years and never had an engine problem apart from expected wear and tear from high mileage.
From day one back in 1974 have changed oils at 1000mile intervals. Use HPR30 for the BM, change at 2000 kays but that has an oil filter and it's only a BM so don't care as much :D

Makes sense Rob but there have been issues with the cam and bucket  I am running and I am happy to do anything to avoid any more issues.Hopefully the new harder buckets are the answer, will know tomorrow with an inspection after a bit of hard running on the Snowy Run but I like belts and bracers. Its only another $5 or $10 a change

Yep, synthetic oils do leak more, and they need a modern full flow oil filter to work. To stop wear on the cams and buckets you need an oil with a lot of ZDDP (zinc stuff). So a mineral with high zinc eg Vertex Racing 20-50

The cam/follower wear issue is much worse on SF type motors than the triples. Since I went to Mobil 1 4T fully synthetic on both my road and race SFs since that oil came on the market  ages ago I have had no wear issues, they do not leak, and consume what I would normally expect. The race bike even ran in new bores and pistons with that oil and consumes virtually nothing, the roadbike with the ex-racer barrels and pistons uses a smidge. I do have a magnet in the full flow strainer though. Use what you are happy with. There were plenty of mineral oils that different engines reacted to back in the day as well with smoking, rattling and leaking issues.
