Slight Oil Leak

but the factory parts list indicates, one washer above the locknut & 3 washers between it & the domed nut.
i just like to be different.
yea, back in the '80's, me '79 Jota had a persistent leak at the tensioner screw.  weeks later i discovered a hairline crack in the cover.  then i remembered that fang up the Gap with Lefty on the back.  he still reckons it's the fastest he's ever been to the top of that range!!  woz fun days.  8)

Mark,

The 3 copper washers under the domed nut were only to take up the length of the adjuster screw.  As the adjuster disappeared into the case, 1 or more washers could be omitted.

The hairline cracks are often found in conjunction with scrape marks on the domed nut(the factory fitted a squared-off short one).  Unfortunately, oil seeps through the thread of the lock nut, so the copper washer isn't much good at all.

H-D has a clever fix for that, as they have a near-identical adjusting set up on their Sportsters.  Thread a M10 nyloc nut onto the adjuster screw with the locking side to the chain slipper end, and stick it in the lathe chuck.  Remove the crimped-over bit of the nut that keeps the nylon ring in place, as well as about 0.5mm of the spigots' length without disturbing the lock-ring.  You now have a self-sealing adjuster screw, no more fucking around with copper washers, and above all, no more leaks.  Just that you now need 2 hands to tighten the nut, one for the screwdriver and one for the spanner.  The adjuster screw can be shortened by about 20mm beforehand, the danger of grounding the screw and thus breaking the cover is greatly reduced.

Failing that, you might also use a dowty washer in place of the copper item, not so sure it effectively seals the thread though.

Two purposes; one; to stop the oil, doesn't matter how many washers you have, oil will still makes it's way down the thread.
Two; cosmetic.

what size copper washers and dome nut do I need?

M10 domed nut and same for copper.
I have just removed mine out of curiosity, sure the oil has wicked its way down the thread past the nuts and washers into the domed nut, but has been prevented from reaching the outside world because of the copper - no leaks on the floor, not a drip, ever.

If you lot are going to go off topic:

I had to google, but if I have got it right it's cuts, crackdown on bludgers, bracket creep on taxation and allowances and a levy on high earners to help the Federal Gov out.
The previous bunch must have been amazingly incompetent to rack up debts considering the mining boom and all that.

Anyway! welcome to our world!

5 minutes back we had a miracle economy, survived the GFC better than anyone. We now are seconds away from going broke. The true is somewhere in the middle i suppose,I just find it hard to see big sticks being taken to those who need the most help. And as I said whats happening not a surprise to me.Thats what they do,what is a surprise is how its a surprise to so many others.

I run some very thin and narrow Teflon tape around the adjuster bolt, just barely enough to cover the last 2-3 threads of the bolt when screwed in. Combined with a dowty washer under the factory nut this keeps the bike from leaking any oil on the ground.
May give Piets method a try in the future.
