spedometer drivegear on hub

So, would a drum front brake have different speedo gearing?

Not necessarily different gearing, but different gears.

All ND instruments had the same gear ratios, drum and disc hubs used diffent gear diameters.  Smiths clocks had different ratios, only disc wheels that had them fitted were SFC1000, until the clocks were replaced with Veglias, which used the same ratio as the NDs.

Ducati always used a separate drive gearbox on the disc front hub, Guzzis take the speedo drive from the gearbox output.

Both quite useless for Laverda applications.

So, can I use a 'disc' ND speedo on a drum wheel (SF)?
i.e. will it work properly? (I know I can use one, but...)

Yes - but only if the gears were originally meant for an ND item - not Smiths - count the teeth on a disc hub and if it's the same - it's Ok - Regards - Phil

if you look at the face of the Smiths speedo, at the base circle area of the face you will see some numbers,
for speedo's with /600 digits the front wheel drive gears should be 12/15 teeth and
if you see /1000 digits then the gears should be 11/22 teeth.
That is for the early and late Smiths speedos, one of them works for ND and Veglia, not sure which, most likely the 11/22
