speedo gear drive unit rotating

Hi all,
Just did an oil change getting ready for the season and I noticed the speedo gear drive housing had rotated to the point where the cable is pulled nearly taught when the bike is static. When I sit on it the sag reduces the amount of tension in the cable and it looks ok. The black vinyl cable protection has cracked near the housing exit so I am thinking of taking the tension off and thinking of a shrink tubing fix to keep water and grime out of the cable itself down there.

What is the correct way to rotate this housing and to what degree do I need to rotate it? Is there a detent or something that we missed at the last tire change? I imagine I just loosen the axle and rotate it back, right?

Thanks
Bob

Apart from that issue, I.e too tight,  beware too loose; I once had an almost nasty mishap doing a u turn. The excess in the speedo cable got caught around the oil cooler..luckily it just yanked the speedo through its mounting and I didn't end up in a heap. Now I just have a looseish cable tie around it to the brake line .

At my last tyre change I stupidly let the speedo drive unit rotate when tightening the wheel nut and cost myself a speedo cable. I won't make that mistake again.  :-[

Hi Bob,

Remember that the cable is spinning only when you are on the bike, so set the drive gear rotation so the cable is in a nice gentle swoop when the forks are compressed by your weight (and not extended, such as when the bike is on the centre stand).  HTH, P.
