Hi Guys
My Lav's speedo stopped on the way back from the Goowood Revival last weekend and I can't figure out why....
Cable drive has not broken the ends are not mashed if you detatch from the clock and roll the bike foreword the drive revolves twisting the drive with fingers the drive remains engaged.Leaving the clock attached and detatching the bottom and attaching a drill the speedo goes up to 25mph and holds which is my drills top speed.I have fiddled with the little play in the cable to see if I could get it not to work but all seems ok.Also I have dissasembled the speedo drive on the wheel all teeth present and the worm drive moves freely.
After fiddling I test ride the bike speedo works for 200yds or so then the needle begins to drop evan if I'm accelerating and then drops to zero and remains still.
I thought maybe something in the speedo itself has gone but if thats the case why with drill attached does it work.........Help

Have you looked at your speedo drive on the front wheel? I stripped one once and it behaved like you're describing, seemed to be driving but failed under load. Unfortunately, good luck getting another one, unique to Laverda and nobody makes a pattern one.

Hi
Yes I have had a good look at the at the speedo drive in the front wheel I can see no damage to this the worm drive moves freely no swarf all teeth present.

Do you guys think this is the most likely culprit I must admit I thought it must be something in the speedo?

Hi Guys
I have held the cable drive with pliers and tried to move the front and I cant get it to slip.

You should try another cable, some aftermarket ones are a bit too short, I got one of these once, the speedo worked intermittently.

How about attaching the speedo cable into the rev counter and vice versa?
That way the engine revs will tell you if the speedo is broken, and the revcounter will tell you if the speedo drive is the culprit.
They look like the same square end size on the inners.
Gearing is not important as it is a work/not working scenario.

The speedo cable is the quickest and easiest to replace.

Hmm I think I'll try and put a washer under the collar on the inner cable that holds it in the clock so that more inner goes in the clock and see what happens if nothing then I'll try the old swicharoo as suggested thanks guys....

When my speedo stopped working I discovered that the cable was looping around the oil cooler when the forks compressed.
When the forks extended the inner pulled out of the speedo head.
Cable tie round a brake pipe. Job done.
