Starter Clutch 750

Hello All,

I have searched the many threads and cannot find a straight forward answer to this question:

Is it best to assemble the clutch rollers and springs dry or with some lubrication? If with lube what lube is best?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Regards
Mike

Light oil, Mike.

Grease will cause the rollers to slip.  I'd advise to lube once or twice a year, but that does mean the clutch needs to be disassembled.

I use grease but it must be a grease of thin consistency. Heavy thick grease will cause the rollers to slip as Piet mentioned. I take it apart every few thousand miles and clean and re grease. I also got rid of the rivets and put screws holding the plate on to make maintenance easier.

I use whatever grease I have to hand, never had a problem. Used margarine once as a roadside repair on the SFC, might still be in there in fact.
Never do any preventive maintenance, can't be bothered. I take the freewheel off as soon as it gets noisy to avoid damage and change springs, rollers and plungers systematicaly.
The last type of freewheel has small holes drilled into the plunger housings allowing to put some light oil in.

I just use a wiping of thin oil at assembly. It seems to last better than with grease. A weak point on the twins n my experience, but very easily accessible for occasional maintenance.
