Starter motor issue

Been having a few woes with the starter motor on my SF1. Sometimes I just get the click from the relay and nothing else. When this happens putting the bike in gear and rolling it backwards usually gets the starter motor working.

The obvious cause would be brushes/commutator but having pulled it apart they do not look too bad. When I rotate the motor is will rotate most of a turn but then seems to tighten up, it will keep on roatating but it is pretty hard to turn for maybe 1/4 of a turn and then frees up again.

Is this expected behaviour? If not what might be the cause? I belive there is a gearbox on the end of the motor - how easy is this to dissasemble and check?

Seems something is out of round or bent, suggest you whack the armature on some blocks and check the run-out.

Take to bits, clean, rebuild and forget for the next 40 years.
Planetary system is easy to dismantle if I remember rightly. All it needs is grease. Motor itself is easy to open, the only tricky bit is getting the brushes around the pickup on reassembly.
