Starter motor refurbishment

What's wrong with it Padders? Had mine apart recently and gave it bit of a skim and undercut and general cleanup. Not much that can go wrong if not completely stuffed. IMHO

I have one with shorted-out stator windings. The lacquer insulation broke down. Dunno why, maybe from moisture or heat. The old-school auto electrician that I go to said he could re-wind it by hand but it would take a lot of hours and cost more than it was worth.

It was quicker, easier and cheaper to buy another starter motor from Malcolm Cox.

BTW, if anyone has a starter motor with good stator windings, but is knackered for other reasons (stuffed rotor windings or busted commutator), send me a PM. I could build one good motor out of two buggered ones.

hi padders, a strip and clean is normally all they need, there was somebody selling new brushes on ebay for ?9 a set all you need is a big fuckoff soldering iron.

Thanks for all the info, it spins up ok when I connect it to a battery but it sounds a bit funny, not smooth like. And as the engine is off to Keith's in a couple of weeks I thought I'd get it done as a precautionary measure.

FFF.

Check the insulation between the commutator segments, may need undercutting, can be done with a ground down hacksaw blade.

No experience myself, but a few people on this forum have recommended:

Cox Automotive Electrics U.K 01827 712097

Yes I found these guys very good, they rewound a weak SJCE starter of mine and it was good on my race bike afterwards. They claimed at the time, that it would have more power but I cant remember why, must have been different windings or a good sales technique, it had noticeably more power than my Bosch unit!

Unfortunately is a mere ornament now, no fault of the Cox Auto tho'

My Bosch was rewound and fully sorted by London and Essex Auto Electrics ltd tel 01992 523660.combined with Sachsen ignition and an Odessey  battery, never on trickle charge, it starts brilliantly.Well ,used to until I posted this....

If it is just noisy, but still cranks OK, may just be dry bearings. a bit of grease in the right places (not too much at the commutator end!)
Assuming it is a Bosch, also check if the brush holders haven't loosened and pivoted on the carrier plate.
This is quite easily fixed with a bit of epoxy and tightening the rivets.
