starter relay

Just went to start the Mirage and all I get is a rapid clicking from the starter relay and the gen light dimming/going out.
Cream crackered relay or....battery is a (relatively new motobatt) and fully charged but also have slow indicators.
Any ideas before I go playing with the wiring please.

Cheers David

Hi David,

Before you start looking at the starter relay, get a reading of the battery voltage.
Dimming lights and slow indicators points towards a weak battery. If you have jumper cables and access to an external battery, try jump starting the bike. If it starts you can eliminate the relay.

Gerald

Gerald,

You were right, the battery was cream crackered.

Typically I couldn't  find the receipt for the Motobatt (less than a year old - not a happy bunny) so I replaced it with a cheaper lead acid MF jobby and away we go again.

Cheers

David

Very surprised you have a knackered Motobatt after 12 months - unless you're just very unlucky.  I have been using them in GSX-R's, Laverdas, a Honda, and a Ninja for several years now with no issues at all.  Is it possible you have a voltage regulator problem?

Hi Nick.

The battery was not even a year old!

I fitted a new reg/rec at the same time time as the old unit gave up the ghost and fried the old battery.

Must have been bad luck and nothing from customer services thus yet another battery.

David,

Good to hear that you sorted the problem, sorry about the Motobatt packing in so soon.
Check the output voltage of the R/R at higher RPM (+4000) to make sure it didn't fry the Motobatt.

Regards,
Gerald

Used to have battery problems on my Jota, including an Odessy lasting less than a year....no problems at all since fitting a Red / Sachse ignition/ generator...don't even trickle charge the replacement odessy now despite infrequent use.

Spelling Police here Nick  ;)  "Odyssey"  ...I got lots of practice spelling it when I tried to fit one to my Jota,,,I went the same route as you with the Redax Sachse...Not cheap but the bike is worth it..Everything electrical seems better !

Joe

Thanks for that Joe! No electrical gremlins of late, though starter motor hell at one point, and when finally sorted starter clutch failure, hey ho. Basically, bikes of this age will need everything looked at ....part of the fun  perhaps. It is a nice feeling getting things sorted, preferably oneself though there are of course some tasks requiring the odd van to schlepp to Glasgow! Get yer self a copy of Classic Bike end of this month...don't know if they liked it or not.
