Starter ? woes

Nice sunny day, got me gear on to go for ride up the mountain. Hit the starter button and oh horrible noises coming from the vicinity of the starter, F...!

Time to put into practice a well learned skill from my youthful relationship with a 3C and its famous charging system.  The Jota(bitch) push started OK but I was totally nackered and thought about calling the paramedics for some Oxygen and CPR. The downhill bit is really what brought it to life as this old man was effed up after leaping onto the bitches back 3 times.

It was painfully obvious to the wife that I was behaving like a lunatic and the bike would start fine if I would just follow the commands she was yelling at me. Done this before have you?  Well I used to do it practically everyday (get your minds outta the gutter) and on more than a dozen occasions with altered mental faculties.

In the garage pull the starter, bench test it and it spins up beautifully everything on the starter looks good. Drain the oil, off with the generator cover, pull the ignition plate and  I need to remove the36 mm nut on the end of the crank to get the starter cover off.
What do I use to get that nut off I am asking as one that does not have the Laverda special tool, Cheers Dave.

L/H thread Dave, the nut is only a sleeve that runs in the oil seal, if we're talking about the same nut that is, but all nuts on the alt end are L/H

If the Starter seems fine, the backing plate that holds the Dog Bearings in place may have loosened on the back your you Starter Clutch and has to be flattened and tack-weld firmly in place. The starter clutch can create a terrible noise when the starter is engaged, rattling the Dog Bearings around and not grabbing the Crank. 750's are notorious for this - Can't say about the triples. Good time to go through and clean the Starter Clutch, replace the Dog Springs and use 80 weigh Hypoid to assemble her with. The Dog bearing may also be damaged but unlikely. You might have to put the Crank Flywheel in a Drill Press and smooth it with a flat file if it is bruised. Good time to replace the main seal while your at it - Good Luck

Hi dave - Hope you've still got the 3C toolkit - if so you already  on the way to having the right tool to undo the nut - The Q/D rear wheel spanner for the wire wheel models can be bent and used as per photo. The tube welded on it butts against another factory crank holding tool to make sure it doesn't slip off. - I was given this by a Laverda factory mechanic - Regards - Phil
