You bring sadness to my ideals Drinko, for you i will use appropriate punctuation:

And here was me about to slam Mr "ah don need no steeking counta balance shaft"  Ian, and get back on to gaffa tape solutions, when you've beaten me to the draw, with a couple of mooners - I dips my lid sir, you are a man of wit and style.

And of course some graphics - i know how you enjoy your graphics:

We don't need no stinking badges!

Ah Peterrrr, you sell me short man.. I know I 'don' need no steeken' balance shafta..' coz I been racing with the Monty.. and he always tells me what he needsa... see my blog at www.ozlaverdaracing.com
we have built reliability and some pace into it.. and the 'vibes' matter nought..

But you are of course welcome to seek your opportunities... ;)

There's a few riders converting their 500/600/'s to a 90? crank - almost end of vibes and associated failures - If i ever get another 8 valver - that's the way I would go - would have liked that 750 racer that was going cheap on another thread that was in France. I reckon a 90? conversion would sort out  reliability problems a fair amount. - Regards - Phil

looking at our friends cracked frame in Rome, on the forum , made Me look twice, (not that there was a crack ) but where it was, this frame must be a early type as i have three frames from the 80's and all these frames have larger gussets that go past the point of the crack on the picture , which would tell me that laverda had a problem, then extended the gussets to over come it ? , i will try and down load a picture so that you can see the mod, it would be easy to remove the old gussets ,make a new set and replace them over the crack reinforcing that point , but making sure the frame /head stock is straight first.
best regards
Austen

The work's 500s had extra bracing around the headstock and on at least one of the work's bikes the factory welded a perforated stiffening spine the entire length of the down tube.
My bike's got the braced headstock but I didn't bother with the spine because I felt in might introduce some unwelcome heat affected zones.
My race bike runs without a balancer shaft, the absence of a balancer on a track bike is barely noticeable because you aren't running at a steady RPM, on a road bike the lack of balancer might present a problem in certain circumstances.
My Atlas has a balancer fitted and it works very well [the Atlas balancer is a full width affair like the Zanes have].
As Phil says, the best solution is a re-phased crank.
I believe this month's Classic Bike Guide has a feature about a Laverda with a re-phased crank... :D :D

Many thanks for coming back to the subject
Are the 3 frames you refer to standard 500 - alpino?
my 500 - alpino is from the first series; i.e. no balanced crankshaft mechanism and early fuel tank (larger bottom)
Yes Austen, I would very much appreciate if you manage to upload a picture of a modified one with extended gussets
kind regards
eric

Come to think of it, my ex wifes 500 which was raced had bracing along the spine tube.
For obvious reasons, no pics!
Ciao

My ex wife suffered from a big crack too. I have some pictures, but, someone, somewhere around the world may be eating whilst reading this.

Just had a look in the shed.
No crack in the 1977 500, nor in the 1979 Montjuic.
This bike has a 41mm M1R with 4 caliper pots, so I guess the frame around the steering head has to deal with a lot of forces during braking, but so far no problem.
The latter originally had a balancer shaft, but during a race at Assen it came out by itself.
Never put it back.

Hans

You beat me to it Chris. Maybe the ex wife's crack wasn't overly large at all but the haggis was overly small :)
Back to topic. I'd be making up a jig to make sure everything lines up before re-welding it.
Simple enough to do I would have thought.
I reckon it's all down to the factory weld technique leaving the surrounding metal brittle.

Haggis, do you want to buy any more pictures of her?  If so, PM me.....
Hey Chris, you must be a keen photographer too, I remember I had to buy a new super-wide angle lens for that shot.....

I remember I was shuffling around down there once and bumped into Captain Kirk. I queried why he was mooching around inside my wife's fanny and he said "Come in and help us, we've lost the Enterprise...."  (Joke last told in the school yard 1974)

Here's a photo of Austens Race winning Barcelona frame, showing the different bracing. Ok I'll just do as I was told and post the photo..
regards Rob
