This note just acknowledges that Herr Dipl. Eng. Witt's controversial (I guess) method of finding TDC and placing the base plate at 32 degrees with a caliper is near-as-dammit dead accurate with some care. I read Piet's post re the accuracy of the method, but, as I am going through a "fully restored" bike and having found a number of things not as nice as I like, I had to check anyway.
The caliper method showed the Witt DMC base plate was placed correctly, but, I wanted to double-check with a degree wheel, which I did. About two hours of faffing later (my first TDC journey w. piston stop and degree wheel), I found the base plate was placed accurately.
