tomaselli throttle problem

hi at all,
today i have mounted my 4 leading shoe grimeca. everything worked well, the levers/armatures
and the throttle (tommaselli with two cables) all fitted without problems. nearly without problems:
when i pull the brake lever there is a bit small space( or contact) between the lever and the throttle.
do the racer  use one cable throttle tommaselli with a cable splitter? solutions?

Post a pic.
The golden rule with throttle/brake conflict is to whenever possible have the cable/s exiting above the brake lever.
In the event of the throttle housing slipping it cannot get stuck under the brake lever.

Funny you should mention this as I had the exact same problem arise yesterday when out on 1173, however, instead of the throttle housing slipping the brake lever rose up to meet it. This was caused by the lever mounted mirror catching too much wind at speed and rotating backwards & bringing the brake lever up with it. At speeds when you'd rather have your eyes on the road this caused a bit of a fright :o :o

I was once heading down to Southern California from San Francisco on my SF1 and came across a guy who had a flat tyre. So with his wheel in hand I gave him a lift to the next town for repairs. I was on Hwy101 and when I veered onto the off ramp with the intention of turning left for the town, unfortunate my brakes didn't slow me enough to make that turn so in the end I went straight through the stop sign and back onto the on ramp and had to go another 5 miles tot eh next off ramp and turn around. I miss calculated the speed I was going and the extra weight of the bloke on the back.  I really don't like drum brakes.

Rob, I had a flat rear on my SF on I-5 heading northbound towards Milpitas on a Friday afternoon when a guy on a Goldwing stopped and asked me if I could get the rear off, and if so he would take me to a shop to get a new tube. Three minutes later I was on the back holding the tire and away we went. He had brakes, some asshole pulled out in front of us and no way was I letting go of the tire. We made it ok, but your story brought back that fond 1982 memory  8). Yes I am old

hi @ all,
well i hear the age of you between your words ;) and the old trapper stories 8)
but this do not solve my problem, so i will appreciate constructive ideas :-*

and motoddrob, these were the times where we said:" the one who brakes first is the first looser",the other way sometimes leaded us to a deviation :D
but, last year i was really fast while riding with friends on the roads, breaking first but catching all up in front of a curve :o

i am searching for a really small (circumference smaller than tommaselli) throttle

Get yourself the twin-pull Magura throttle that was fitted to most SFCs. No longer in production unfortunately..

Marnix

now that is interesting.  thanks Marnix.
i did wonder what it was doing on me SF2, and have considered re-installing the single cable twist grip to the ND switch block.

but i do like the Magura throttle.  had one on me Spondon years ago.
so,  me SeFFie has a bit of SFC dna in her ay.  kool  ;)

yea Lee, i have considered running the cables above the lever.  might give it a try later.
cheers,  Mark

<edit>  & with braided lines, & no air in the system, that lever doesn't move much at all.  has heaps of clearance to the throttle and switch block.

If it's only a tiny bit of contact between the brake lever and the throttle housing, I would be tempted to carefully file just a little bit off the throttle housing, just enough to stop the contact. I've also had that problem with the lever touching the throttle, it's annoying.
The throttle I had on my Yamaha XS1 was a twin cable throttle, and I seem to remember it was very compact. Still available new as a Yamaha part, or easy to find on eBay. Alternatively, you could use a cable splitter under the tank and a single cable throttle, like the very early Laverda triples did. Just about any 1970s NipponDenso throttle should work, maybe Yamaha RD350, then you could adapt the RD350 cable. You would even have an extra cable (the oil pump cable) for a throttle position sensor  :D!

huh, throttle positon sensor, i think my ignitech will manage that. but- no- i am hunting now for a
magura twin pull throttle. by the way, does anyone know if the magura sport double cable throttle
mounted on the bmw r 69 in the late sixties is the same for the sfc`s?

Hi Michael, hi Marnix,
a german motorcycle parts dealer bought the Magura tools for to produce the twin pull throttle 305.1 - you can get it here:

Ciao, Gert

Hi Michael,
Another option would be to change your brake lever.  I have a double sided Grimeca brake on one of my bikes and that uses the twin pull brake lever from a Suzuki GT750. It also comes with a brake light switch. That bike also has a Tommaselli throttle.
Might work with your bike.

Thanks Gert, lovely.

well, after drilling, milling and grinding, the tomaselli fits perfect.
5 min. ago the magura came - fits better

mchael

hi,
just for documentation: the outer diameter of the tommaselli throttle is 59 mm, versus
the magura 45,5 mm.
