Triple centre stand

Ok, the issue is likely that the stand is tired.
Does it have 2 adjustment bolts and lock nuts? This will allow a small degree of increased clearance for the rear tyre and still maintain stability on the stand.
If you had the wrong stand then it would barely touch the ground if too short and give you a hernia if it was the longer type.
Plus, you never know if some DPO has 'improved' it somehow.

Rarely that the stand itself is tired, mostly the stops on the frame bent and the mounting holes worn.  New bushes and bolts and careful adjustment can compensate much of the wear and tear.  Oversize bushes for badly worn stand eylets are available, reaming the stand eylets to size is a pita though...

I have seen twisted and bent stands, and as you say also damage to the mounts on the frame.

Yes, but bending and twisting usually results from negligence in regard to the mountings... and/or draping scantily-clad (heavy) ladies (reckon Tracy was no lightweight!) on the bike while on the centre stand.  :o
