As I was polishing my frame today I had another look at the kinked left tube. Now I'm sure we all know why it's kinked, but I can't believe it was designed to be like that. So who gets the blame and why was it not rectified before production started?

Of course it was designed like that, the engine won't fit otherwise... :D

Anyway, what's wrong with a kink in the downtube?  Ever looked at a naked japanese frame of the 70's/80's?  Lots of umsymetrical frames to be seen there, usually to aid production procedures.

Given the tube guage and the weight of the triple frame, the little kink isn't going to compromise stability in any way.

Many years ago my partner at Motodd bought a 3C that had had the frame straightened, including removing the kink, after an accident - the rebuild went well for the seller until he came to fit the exhaust pipes - this pushed him over the edge so he sold it for ?600. My partner decided he'd run it for a while then rebend the frame later. we welded a half moon piece in the exhaust to clear the frame, then it was run for ages with no apparent adverse problems. I think he sold it to another customer who built it into a Saxon/Motodd frame. - regards - Phil

Yes it isnt a myth this frame straightening when it's not bent malarky. I've just been looking at a fine example of it.

Got one here at the moment that has been de kinked, exhaust has burnt the nice new powdercoat off the frame quite nicely.

I had forty fits when I first saw my frame with the kink....Andy Wagners catelogue shows it clearly  though.

I remember one bloke coming up to me at the bike show in Edinburgh one year. He told me he'd inherited a stripped Jota (matching numbers, Slater's letter etc) but the frame was bent. He then talked about cutting it up to fit in the wheelie bin and searching for a replacement frame...

At this point I walked him over to the nearest triple (Bill's Jarama) and showed him the kink: he swore briefly and then, to my great relief, showed me the cutting discs he'd just wasted ?5 on as he didn't need them after all.

Must go along to the VMCC branch he said he was in to see if he's fixed the Jota. He said he'd also got a Benelli Sei that's been awaiting repair for 20 years

but was it a design cockup or planed like that? :o

I bought my Corsa for 500 quid, because
A) it had been left outside for six years folowing a minor crash with a car, that had knocked the bike over (whilst poarked on centre stand) breaking the screen and headlight plus minor things and
B) the impact had distorted the frame so badlky the front left downtube has a kink in it!
