Triple Oil Pump missing plug?

OK ,below hopefully is a picture of my original oil pump case on the left and a higher output 9mm on the right from Wolfgang. You can see there is a plug missing on the higher output case. Anyone know if this is deliberate i.e an extra inlet or should it be plugged also ?

I think it isn't a plug, but there should be a shaft there to take one of the gears in the pump, no?

No Grant the shaft for the lower gear is set in the crank cases. It's definatly a short alloy plug. i think i've just read a thread that mentions an outlet into the primary chaincase. Will do some more looking.

This is perfectly normal. The oldest pumps didn't have the plug then the factory put it since 1976 (produc. number 3352) as the 6mm pump didn't deliver much pressure in some cases. These big 9mm pump now have enough pressure to get rid of the plug again.

It looks like the hole is just a bush for the idler gear to run in.
Any oil leaking from the pump will lubricate the bush and then be lost to somewhere in the engine.

No Simon the idler gear runs on a stub shaft set in the cases. Pic shows original 7mm gear fitted. The hole or blank in the cover is inline with the centre of the shaft but the shaft does not extend into it. In the second pic the 9mm gear is fitted the shaft is now I suppose 2mm to short and does not support the full gear width. I have a cunning plan here. I shall ignore it and just screw the cover on. :D

Most probably the hole is used during production, ie. locating the pump body to mill the gear bores(remember, no CNC machinery around at the time, especially not in Breganze.... don't even remember seeing many multi-spindle machines there either!).

As JLO stated, early bodies were plugged, later not.  Makes no difference either way.

IF oil escapes in large volume from the hole, the pump's totally knackered!

Thanks Piet I think your right there. Simon, I can get a longer stub shaft from the later bikes and they're not dear but It would mean spliting the cases again to heat in the oven to get the old one out. The new gear dosn't rock on the old shaft and it runs in near ideal conditions hence my plan to leave it. What could possibly go wrong ? :o
