What do all the buttons do?

Pulled the tank and side panels off my SF1 today to start and tidy up the electrics. There a bit worse than I though even though everything seems to work ok. More of a tidy up and replacement of connectors and various cables to ensure reliability.

Now, my bike has the Lucas switchgear and the harness seems to have wiring for indicators although none are fitted. But what function do the various buttons and 3 position flipper switches have? I don't have a user manual yet and want to make sure everything is wired up correctly.

Left hand switchgear:
top button - ?
bottom button - ?
flipper switch:  up/centre/down?

Right hand switchgear:
top button - ?
bottom button - ?
flipper switch:  up/centre/down?

Might as well get it right from the start......

been a while since i've fooled with lucas switches
if memory serves
left hand buttons are for horn and flash beam
flipper is headlamp
right switch buttons are eng start and kill
flipper is indicators

i should have a wiring diagram around here somewhere
if you post your wire colors i'll look them up
i'd scan but a thunderstorm last year spiked the voltage and i can't seem to revive it

Here is how we set it up on my 750SF(0):

Left top: High Beam (only turns high beam on while you press it, for signal purposes)
Flipper: changes from low to high beam
Left bottom: used for the horn

Right Top: engine start
Flipper: Turn signal (up= left side, down=right side)
right bottom: we did not use it on my bike, but engine stop would be usefull I think.

Here is a scan of my original book that came with my SF2, it is for SF1

Had the same on my Triumph T150, I reckoned most of those buttons served to confuse the russians. At least 3 of them didn't have a function at all. On the left, only the flipper was connected. On the right, the horn was one of the buttons, flipper was pretty idle. Ligth switch was in the headlamp.

I had a mate who was a Triumph mechanic in Melbourne, test riding a T150, a quick full throttle test. It jammed at WOT and he tried frantically all the buttons while fighting off panic, couldn?t find the kill button and ended up locking the front brake. Hurt himself  and wrecked the bike. Brilliant switches. If they are on your bike, learn them well.

Thanks for the feedback, I'd imagined they would be as per what Laverdalothar said so that's the way I shall wire the can of worms up. I'll post a photo of the electrics when I get a chance, good job I like a challenge... :D

Thanks Tippie for the schematic, I've been looking at the one in The Green Book, I'll print yours off.

once you are at it, make sure to use relays for horn and lights (low AND high beam), as the switches live way longer, horns will blow louder and light will be brighter if you do so... very simple installation with one 4 or 6mm? plus line going to the front serving all relays (with a 15A fuse!) and use the lines from the switches just for closing the contacts on each relay. you will be surprised what difference it makes... ;)

Lothar, I've done a similar mod on my ex-mod Armstrong and yes, I was surprised by the difference it made. The headlight on the SF glows a delicate shade of yellow until you wind the revs up so i'll be giving it the same treatment.

Another newbie question.... :D

What do the different ignition key positions operate. On mine the ignition becomes live as soon as I push the key in. Is that normal?

Stuart

Push in the key, ignition ON.  Turn anti-clockwise, lights ON.  Turn clockwise, park lights ON, the key can be removed and the park lights remain.

That at least, is what is supposed to happen... :D
