wire wheels for 79 Jota

There's a lot of reading material here about Gsxr wheel conversions, but are there similar conversions to wire wheels, from say triumph, ducati, or others? What are the experiences? Costs?
Why you ask? Coz i find that much more beautiful, and coz i like dreaming up what i'd do to my bike once the bloody house renovation is over.

Mingh,

Easiest is using the early stock front wheel and the later SFC1000 rear, will bolt straight in at the front, needs a bit of imagination for the rear caliper (or you use SFC1000 bits).  The SFC 1000 front will require shimming under the brake discs.... is otherwise also bolt-in.

I've seen bevel Ducati and Guzzi wheels on Lavs, but their current pricing is a bit prohibitive.

I'm currently looking at fitting a rear hub from a big jap enduro, looks as if it will fit without too many issues.  Be a while though till I get round to actually doing it!

Moto Witt once offered conversion sets consisting of said SFC wheels with caliper and bracketry for the rear to suit.  Stock discs were re-used.  I think we did 20 sets, they sold out quite quickly!

Piet,
i bought some SFC1000 wheels about 6 years ago from a chap in Germany and the front didn`t need any spacers behind the disks, they fitted my Jota with just a different sized spacer between the fork and the wheel,  would you think that means they`re  one of the sets that Moto Witt produced rather than proper SFC ones?

Rob,

Depends on what you consider "proper" SFC hubs, they were at first just altered stock cast items.

Only when stocks of these dried up (which was pretty quickly) were billet hubs made by Moto Witt and sent to the factory.  At the same time Moto Witt also had hubs made to the stock dimensions, these were for spares purposes and went into said conversion sets.  Production of billet hubs continued until at least 1993-4 to cater for customer demand of conversion kits.

The SFC requires slightly slimmer hubs because the M1R fork sliders are larger in diameter, neccesitating narrower disc spacing.  The fitting in the forks is identical, same axle, spacers and speedo drive box.

Close to the end of production, Moto Witt even took over the task of wheel building, sending complete wheels to the factory.

Gerald Gibrell has done a very nice conversion with a SF2 front wheel and a Suzuki GS 750 hub laced on a Akront rim, an idea from Scott Potter originally:  http://www.laverdamania.net/fichetech25gb.htm
